Chapter 4 - The Shattered Contract

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Flashbulbs went off like small explosions as reporters surged forward toward the stage.
Vanessa’s face turned white as chalk. “Arthur... what is he talking about?”
“He’s lying!” Arthur shouted, reaching for the binder, but two of Adrien’s security officers stepped smoothly between them. “This is a smear campaign!”
“The three million dollars your daughter transferred out of my holding accounts yesterday morning was flagged by the treasury department,” Adrien said, his voice flat, devoid of mercy. “It was traced directly to an illegal port lease debt in Galveston. The merger is off, Arthur. And your seats on the maritime board have been revoked.”
Vanessa looked from her father to Adrien, then her furious gaze landed on Clara.
“You!” Vanessa shrieked, taking a step toward Clara with her nails curved like claws. “You ruined this! You manipulative, fat little peasant! He’s using you to embarrass me!”
Clara didn't flinch. She didn't step back behind Adrien. She took one step forward, standing at her full height, her dark eyes flashing with absolute calm authority.
“Mr. Duca didn't need me to embarrass you, Miss Hawthorne,” Clara said, her voice clear and resonant. “You did that yourself the moment you treated a partnership like a heist. A good tailor knows when a garment is beyond repair. And this marriage was trash before it ever touched my table.”
The crowd gasped. Vanessa raised her hand to strike Clara, but Adrien caught her wrist in mid-air with a force that froze her instantly.
“Touch her,” Adrien whispered, his amber eyes burning with a lethal heat that terrified everyone within arm's reach, “and I will ensure your family doesn't own a single square foot of property in this state by morning.”
He released Vanessa’s wrist, letting her stagger back into her father’s arms.
Then, turning his back on the disgraced Hawthornes, Adrien offered his arm to Clara.
“Shall we go, Clara?” he asked gently.
May you like
Clara smiled, placing her hand securely over his forearm. “I think we’ve seen enough of the gala, Adrien.”
Together, they walked out of the ballroom through a sea of flashing lights and gasping onlookers, leaving the shattered remains of the Hawthorne empire behind them.
