Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Thread

The destruction of Bennett Alterations was cleaned up within forty-eight hours, financed entirely by Adrien’s personal accounts. But instead of simply repairing the old space, Adrien bought the adjacent bakery building, expanding Clara’s small shop into a breathtaking, two-story atelier.

Bennett & Duca Tailoring was born.

The lower floor remained Clara’s beloved neighborhood shop, where local working-class brides could get their dresses altered at fair prices. The upper floor became a high-end design studio where Clara created custom, breathtaking gowns for women of all shapes and sizes—celebrating lush curves, strong shoulders, and authentic beauty.

Three months after the attack, on a brilliant, sunny morning in May, Clara stood in her new upstairs studio, looking at herself in the floor-to-ceiling mirror.

She wore the dress she had finished herself—the cream-colored lace gown using her grandmother’s sixty-year-old Italian pattern. It fit her curves with absolute perfection, the ivory silk sweeping down into a soft train, embroidered with tiny pearls that caught the morning light.

Molly stood behind her, crying softly as she adjusted the veil. “You look... like a dream, Clara.”

There was a quiet knock at the door.

Eleanor Duca walked inside, wearing a deep navy silk dress, holding a bouquet of fresh white peonies and lavender.

“The cars are ready, my dear,” Eleanor said, her eyes shining with warmth. “Adrien has been pacing the foyer downstairs for forty minutes. If you don't come down soon, he’s going to tear his tuxedo.”

Clara laughed—a rich, happy sound that filled the room—and took the bouquet from Eleanor’s hands.

“I’m ready,” Clara said softly.
