Chapter 10 - The Empire of Family

Spring came to the Rocky Mountains with a rush of emerald-green grass, blooming alpine wildflowers, and crystal-clear streams fed by melting snow.

The Prescott estate had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love. The corporate wars, the forged letters, the stolen millions, and the bitter loneliness of the past felt like a lifetime ago—a distant nightmare washed away by the reality of the present.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, the sprawling green lawn behind the Cherry Hills estate was set up for a celebration. There were no corporate executives in sight, no board members demanding signatures, and no ruthless competitors plotting hostile takeovers.

Instead, the lawn was filled with laughter, colorful balloons, and the sound of children running through sprinklers.

Luke, now nearly three, was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the grass, his bright green eyes crinkling as he laughed hysterically. Violet sat on a picnic blanket with Cassandra, carefully feeding her stuffed elephant a pretend cup of tea while babbling happily in her own toddler language.

Damon walked out onto the stone patio, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade. He wore a simple linen shirt and dark denim, looking more like a relaxed family man than a billionaire industrialist—and he had never felt more powerful in his life.

He walked over to the picnic blanket, setting the tray down before dropping gracefully onto the grass beside Cassandra. She looked up, shading her eyes from the bright mountain sun, and smiled as he handed her a glass of lemonade.

“You look entirely too relaxed for a man who just successfully restructured three international subsidiaries via email,” Cassandra teased, taking a sip from her glass.

“Delegation is a wonderful thing,” Damon replied with a soft laugh, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close against his side. “I’ve learned that the most important empire you can ever build doesn't require a board of directors, a legal team, or a hostile takeover.”

Cassandra leaned her head against his shoulder, watching Luke tumble playfully into the grass with the puppy while Violet clapped her hands in delight.

“And what kind of empire is that?” she asked softly.

Damon looked out over his children, then down at the woman who had brought light back into his world when he was standing completely in the dark.

“An empire of family,” Damon said, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. “And unlike the rest of them... this one is built to last forever.”

The afternoon sun dipped slowly behind the majestic peaks of the Rockies, casting a golden, eternal glow over the yard, where the laughter of children echoed into the evening breeze, wrapping them all in a happily ever after that was truly worth fighting for.
