Chapter 9 - The Promise Renewed

As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, the skies above Denver erupted in a magnificent display of fireworks, painting the snowy mountain peaks in brilliant shades of crimson, gold, and sapphire.

The children were fast asleep in their newly decorated, sun-drenched bedrooms upstairs. Downstairs, the house was quiet, save for the crackling of the fireplace and the soft strains of jazz playing from the surround-sound system.

Damon and Cassandra stood out on the wide, wrap-around stone balcony, wrapped in heavy wool blankets against the crisp mountain chill. Cassandra held a glass of champagne, while Damon held a tumbler of bourbon, though neither of them was paying much attention to their drinks.

They were looking out over the twinkling lights of the city spread out below them, a stark contrast to the cold, distant skyscrapers Damon used to rule.

“Happy New Year, Cassandra,” Damon whispered, turning to look at her profile as a burst of golden light bloomed across the night sky.

She turned her head, her green eyes sparkling in the reflection of the fireworks. “Happy New Year, Damon.”

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet box that didn't look like it had come from a corporate jeweler or a hurried concierge. It was simple, elegant, and timeless.

Cassandra’s breath caught in her throat as she saw it.

“Three years ago, I let a lie tear us apart because I wasn't paying attention,” Damon said, his voice steady, earnest, and completely devoid of the armor he used to wear. “I missed your pregnancy. I missed their first steps, their first words, their first Christmases. I can’t give those years back to you, Cassandra. I will regret them for the rest of my life.”

A tear slipped down her cheek, but she was smiling.

“Damon...” she began, but he gently pressed a finger to her lips, silencing her.

“What I can do is promise you every single day that comes after,” Damon continued, dropping down smoothly onto one knee on the cold stone balcony, ignoring the snow beneath him. He opened the velvet box to reveal a stunning diamond ring—not flashy, but brilliantly cut, classic, and enduring. “Cassandra Hayes, you are my home, my family, and my entire world. Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life proving it to you?”

The silence of the mountain night seemed to hold its breath. The distant echoes of New Year celebrations faded into the background, leaving only the sound of the wind through the pines and the steady beating of their hearts.

Cassandra didn't hesitate.

May you like

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice breaking with emotion as she pulled him up by the lapels of his sweater. “Yes, Damon. A thousand times, yes.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her—a deep, passionate, unhurried kiss that sealed the past away and opened the door to a future they would build together, side by side.
