Chapter 8 - The Morning After

By 8:00 AM, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant blue sky over the Hudson Valley.

Teams of specialized private contractors had already replaced the shattered glass of the foyer, scrubbed the marble floors, and removed every trace of the night's battle. To an outsider walking up the long drive, the Falcone estate looked as serene and majestic as it ever had.

In the subterranean safe room, the heavy steel doors slid open.

Rebecca stepped out into the hallway, holding Clementine’s hand. Her heart pounded against her ribs as she walked up the stone stairs, expecting to see destruction, blood, and tragedy.

Instead, she stepped into the grand dining room to find sunshine streaming through pristine glass windows.

Adriano sat at the head of the long table. He was dressed in a clean, crisp white dress shirt, his hair damp from a shower. There was a small bandage covering a minor cut on his left temple, but otherwise, he looked completely unharmed.

When he saw Rebecca and Clementine, he stood up immediately.

Clementine broke away from her mother’s grip, running across the polished floor with unbridled joy. "Mr. Adriano!"

Adriano knelt down, catching the little girl in his arms, lifting her high into the air before pulling her into a warm embrace. "Good morning, little one. Did you sleep well?"

"I heard loud noises, but the star light kept me safe!" Clementine cheered, touching the small bandage on his forehead. "Did you fix the roof?"

"Yes," Adriano smiled softly, kissing her cheek. "The roof is completely fixed."

He set Clementine down near a side table loaded with fresh pastries and juice, then walked over to Rebecca.

Rebecca looked at him, her hazel eyes filled with a mixture of awe, relief, and deep, unspoken emotion. She reached up, her soft fingers gently touching the edge of the bandage on his temple.

"It's over?" she whispered.

"It's over," Adriano assured her, covering her hand with his own. "Arthur Vance and his allies are gone. The docks are under my complete control. There is no one left in this city who can ever threaten you again."

Rebecca closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to release three years of buried pain, fear, and grief.

"I was so afraid I was going to lose you," she whispered, her voice cracking.

May you like

Adriano pulled her close, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, resting his chin against the top of her head.

"You're never going to lose me, Rebecca," he swore gently. "I spent three years searching for Thomas's family. Now that I've found you... I am never letting you go."
