Chapter 2 - Shadows over Zurich

The silence in the dining room became absolute.

Julian slowly turned his head to look at the child. He took in the dark curls—the exact shade of his late wife’s hair. He looked at the tiny, almond-shaped brown eyes—his own eyes, staring back at him from a three-year-old face.

Two years ago, Maya had been four. If she were alive, she would be six.

"She's three," Julian said, his mind racing wildly, clutching at threads of logic to protect himself from a soul-crushing disappointment. "Amara is three years old. My daughter would be six."

"They used experimental memory-suppression drugs and trauma-induced developmental regression at the clinic," Grace explained, her voice frantic, whispering fast. "When I rescued her from the Petrov estate in Vienna eighteen months ago, she couldn't speak. She couldn't walk. She had forgotten her name, her age, her parents. I spent a year hiding in rural France, nursing her back to health. Her mind reset itself to survive the terror. To her... she is three years old. She believes I am her mother because I was the only face she saw when she woke up in the dark."

Julian stood up, his hand trembling as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. His fingers were shaking so badly he could barely type the encrypted code.

He hit speed dial.

"Boss?" answered Marcus, Julian’s brilliant, cold-blooded head of intelligence. "Is everything alright? Viktor said you locked the dining room."

"Marcus," Julian commanded, his voice vibrating with an terrifying blend of hope and rage. "I need Dr. Aris Thorne at the estate in twenty minutes. Bring a portable DNA sequencer. Tell no one. If a single word of this leaves your lips, I will end you."

"On my way, Boss."

Julian ended the call and walked over to the chair where the little girl sat. He slowly sank to his knees beside her.

Amara—or Maya—tilted her head. She reached out one small, soft hand and touched Julian’s cheek.

"You look like you need a hug, Mister," she said softly.

Julian let out a broken, ragged breath. He closed his eyes as her tiny hand rested against his face. For two years, he had been a walking corpse, driven solely by bloodlust and vengeance. He had laid waste to rival cartels, bought politicians, and turned Chicago into his personal fortress—all while feeling completely dead inside.

Now, the soft touch of a child was burning away two years of ice.

"Why did you come here, Grace?" Julian asked quietly, his eyes still closed, holding the little girl’s hand against his cheek. "Why bring her to my house instead of telling me immediately?"

"Because the Petrov Syndicate is still hunting us," Grace confessed from the floor. "Six months ago, they tracked us to Paris. I knew I couldn't protect her alone anymore. I knew the only place on earth safe from Viktor Petrov was inside the fortress of Julian Hale. But I had to be sure you hadn't turned into a monster, Julian. I had to see if there was any piece of the father left in you before I gave her back."

Before Julian could answer, the security alarm on his phone began to chime softly. A red flash blinked across the screen: PERIMETER BREACH — SOUTH GATE.

Grace gasped, scrambling to her feet.

Julian stood up instantly, his dark eyes instantly shifting from grieving father back to lethal mob kingpin. The soft, broken man disappeared, replaced by a predator.

"They found us," Grace whimpered, pulling the little girl into her arms. "The Petrovs... they followed my trail."

Julian pulled a sleek, silenced customized pistol from a hidden holster inside his velvet jacket. He racked the slide with a cold, metallic sound.

"Nobody touches my child," Julian hissed, turning toward the heavy oak doors. "Not again."
