Chapter 4 - The Bloodline

Forty feet beneath the mansion, inside the blast-proof titanium panic room, the air was warm and smelled faintly of ozone.
Dr. Aris Thorne sat at a stainless-steel table, watching the digital display of his portable DNA sequencer. Beside him, Julian stood like a statue, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the glowing blue progress bar on the screen: ANALYSIS 98% COMPLETE.
In the corner of the room, on a leather sofa, Grace sat holding Amara, who had finally fallen asleep, exhausted by the night's terror. Her dark curls were spread across Grace’s lap, her small chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace.
BEEP.
The sequencer chimed softly.
Dr. Thorne stared at the monitor, his eyes widening behind his gold-rimmed spectacles. He adjusted his glasses, reading the primary markers twice to ensure there was no digital error.
"Julian," Dr. Thorne whispered, looking up at his boss with profound shock. "The genetic markers are an exact ninety-nine-point-nine percent match."
Julian’s breath hitched. The room seemed to shrink around him.
"She is Maya," Dr. Thorne continued, his voice trembling slightly. "She is your biological daughter. The neurological scans I took while she slept also confirm heavy pharmacological suppression in her temporal lobe. Grace was telling the truth. Maya’s brain reset itself as a psychological defense mechanism against extreme trauma."
Julian walked slowly toward the sofa. He dropped to his knees before his child—his Maya.
He reached out a shaking hand, gently brushing a soft, dark curl away from her forehead. A tear slipped down his face, dropping onto her small cotton dress.
"My sweet girl," Julian whispered, his voice broken into a million pieces. "You came back to me."
Grace looked down at Julian, tears filling her eyes as well. "I’m sorry I kept her from you for six months, Julian. I was terrified she’d get caught in your crossfire."
"You saved her life, Grace," Julian said, looking up at the housekeeper with intense, eternal gratitude. "You stole her from a syndicate, protected her across Europe, and brought her home. You are no longer my housekeeper. You are under my absolute protection for the rest of your days. You and your family will never want for anything again."
Grace let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for years. "Thank you, Julian."
Suddenly, Marcus stepped into the panic room, holding a secure satellite tablet. His expression was grim.
"Boss," Marcus said softly, breaking the emotional moment. "We have a major problem."
Julian stood up slowly, stepping away from the couch so as not to disturb his sleeping daughter. "What is it?"
"Viktor Petrov just received word that his brother Ivan was killed at your estate tonight," Marcus reported, turning the tablet toward Julian. "He has mobilized the entire Eastern European syndicate. He’s calling in every favor, every mercenary group, every corrupt politician in his pocket. He knows Maya is alive, and he knows she’s with you."
Julian looked down at the screen. Satellite imagery showed a fleet of armed vehicles assembling at a private airfield in Warsaw, bound for Chicago.
"Petrov thinks he’s coming to finish what he started two years ago," Marcus added grimly. "He’s declaring an all-out war on American soil."
Julian looked back at his sleeping daughter. The grief that had consumed him for two years was gone. The shock was gone.
In their place remained an ancient, terrifying clarity.
"He thinks he’s coming to fight a mob boss," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute death. "He doesn't realize he’s coming to fight a father."
Julian turned to Marcus. "Call the Commission. Call the Five Families in New York. Tell them Julian Hale is summoning the High Council to Chicago tomorrow morning."
May you like
Marcus blinked in shock. "The High Council hasn't assembled in person for fifteen years, Boss."
"They will assemble for this," Julian spat, his eyes blazing with dark fire. "Because tomorrow, we don't just defend this house. We wipe the Petrov name from the face of the earth."
