Chapter 6 - The Great Collapse

Dawn broke over Seattle in a wash of cold, steel-gray light, but inside the Hawthorne estate, the storm had already passed, leaving utter devastation in its wake.

By 8:00 AM, federal marshals stood at the front gates of the mansion. Arthur Vance, the mighty real estate tycoon whose name carried terror across the Pacific Northwest, arrived in a black sedan expecting to finalize the multi-billion-dollar merger with Hawthorne Global. Instead, he was met by federal investigators armed with an arrest warrant for his daughter on charges of international child abduction, fraud, forgery, and extortion.

Claire didn't put up a fight. When the authorities escorted her out of the master suite in handcuffs, wrapped in a heavy winter coat with her sunglasses hiding her tear-streaked face, she looked like a ghost of the woman who had sparkled under the crystal chandeliers just twelve hours earlier. The engagement party of the century had transformed into the legal execution of the Vance dynasty in record time.

Upstairs in the grand nursery, the morning sunlight poured through the sheer white curtains, illuminating a scene that felt almost miraculous.

Elena sat in a plush velvet rocking chair by the window. In her arms, little Olivia—still wearing her miniature tuxedo shirt—slept peacefully, her small head resting against her mother’s chest. Elena’s fingers gently stroked the soft brown curls of her daughter’s hair, tears of pure joy tracing silent paths down her cheeks.

Ethan stood by the doorway, leaning against the wooden frame with his arms crossed, watching them with a quiet, overwhelming sense of peace he hadn't felt in years.

A sharp knock broke the silence.

Ethan turned to see his lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Arthur), standing in the hallway looking pale and exhausted.

"Ethan," Marcus whispered, stepping into the hallway and pulling the nursery door half-closed so as not to wake the child. "The emergency board meeting concluded ten minutes ago. The merger with Vance Properties has been permanently voided. The stock took a brief hit, but once the press releases went out detailing Claire’s criminal actions and our preemptive cooperation with federal authorities, the market stabilized. Investors respect transparency. You’ve retained absolute control of Hawthorne Global."

"Good," Ethan said flatly. "Cancel all remaining contracts with the Vance group. I want their name scrubbed from every asset we own by end of day."

"Done," Marcus nodded. He hesitated for a moment, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Ethan... what about your personal standing? The tabloids are having a field day with the engagement cancellation. Do you want me to issue a statement regarding the adoption irregularities?"

Ethan looked back through the crack in the door, watching Elena softly kiss the top of his 'adopted son's' head.

"Tell them the truth," Ethan said quietly. "Tell them that the adoption was legally fraudulent, that the child’s biological mother has been found, and that Hawthorne Global is fully dedicated to supporting their reunification. And Marcus?"

"Yes, Ethan?"

"Draft a new employment contract for our new estate manager," Ethan said with a faint, genuine smile. "Starting salary: half a million a year, full healthcare, and absolute authority over the household staff."

Marcus blinked in surprise, then smiled. "Consider it done, boss."
