Chapter 7 - The Awakening

Three days later, the private pediatric wing of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital looked less like a medical facility and more like a private botanical garden. Baskets of blooming white lilies, balloons, and towering arrangements of spring flowers lined the hallway outside Room 412.

Inside, the room was warm and quiet.

Mila sat propped up against a mountain of plush pillows, wearing a brand-new pink pajama set with little white rabbits on the sleeves. In front of her sat a colossal plate of chocolate chip pancakes, though right now her entire focus was fixed on a brand-new, oversized stuffed teddy bear sitting beside her bed—a bear easily twice her size.

Elena Parker sat in the armchair beside the bed, her face still bearing faint bruises and healing cuts, but her eyes were clear, bright, and filled with a profound, unbreakable life.

The door clicked open softly, and Warren Cade stepped into the room. He had discarded his tailored wool coat; today he wore a simple charcoal button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking less like a cutthroat corporate raider and more like a tired, human man.

"Mister Warren!" Mila squealed happily, dropping her plastic fork and holding her arms out toward him.

Warren couldn't help the smile that broke across his face. He walked over to the bed, scooped the little girl up effortlessly, and spun her around in a gentle circle before settling her back against the pillows.

"How are those pancakes, Captain?" Warren asked, adjusting her blanket. "Did you eat the syrup or did the syrup eat you?"

Mila giggled, wiping a smudge of chocolate off her cheek. "I ate all of it! Mommy said I have to get strong so we can go home."

Warren glanced up, meeting Elena’s gaze across the small hospital room. Elena’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. She reached out, grasping his hand tightly.

"The detectives came by this morning," Elena said softly, her voice still a little raspy. "Viktor Vance and his entire syndicate are behind bars. The federal prosecutor said the documents I recovered from my husband’s archive proved systemic land fraud spanning twenty years. Thornwood Manor... the city is revoking the demolition permits. They’re turning the entire property into a protected historical park and community family center."

Warren nodded slowly, squeezing her hand in return. "Good. The townhomes were a bad investment anyway."

Elena smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that transformed her face. "You didn't have to spend a million dollars paying off my debts, Warren. You didn't have to buy out the medical liens."

May you like

"Yes, I did," Warren said quietly, looking down at Mila, who was now busy showing her stuffed bear its new pancakes. "For thirty years, I believed that everything in this world had a price tag, and that sentiment was just a weakness people used when they couldn't afford reality. But standing out in the cold by that old doghouse... listening to a little girl whisper for her mother... I realized I spent my entire life building an empire out of empty space."

He looked back at Elena. "I don't want to be an empire, Elena. I want to build a home."
