Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept
As twilight began to paint the sky in hues of violet, amber, and deep indigo, the crowds slowly thinned out, leaving the grounds of Thornwood Manor wonderfully peaceful.
The crickets began their evening chorus in the tall grass near the lake, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the ancient maple trees.
Inside the manor’s newly restored grand library—a magnificent room lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, roaring stone fireplaces, and comfortable leather armchairs—Mila had finally fallen fast asleep.
Elena carried her upstairs to one of the newly decorated second-floor bedrooms, tucking her under a handmade quilt while whispering a soft goodnight.
When Elena returned to the library, she found Warren standing by the tall, arched bay window, looking out over the moonlit lake where the water shimmered like crushed silver.
She walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her cheek against his back.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Cade," she murmured softly.
Warren turned around in her arms, wrapping his hands around hers. He looked down into her dark, expressive eyes, seeing a future he had never allowed himself to imagine during all those lonely years in corporate boardrooms and empty penthouses.
"I was just thinking about that first morning," Warren confessed, his voice dropping into a tender whisper. "If Jackson hadn't noticed the blanket... if I had just signed the demo order and walked away..."
"But you didn't," Elena interrupted gently, placing her fingers against his lips. "You heard a voice. And instead of ignoring it like you used to, you listened."
Warren smiled, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead.

"I spent my whole life building walls to keep the world out," Warren said, his voice steady and absolute. "Turns out, the best thing that ever happened to me was a little girl breaking in through the back door."
Elena smiled, pulling him closer as the warm glow of the library hearth cast a golden halo around them both.
