Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Enablers

With Julian’s arrest, the nightmare was far from over; it was merely time to clean house.
At 8:00 AM sharp, the full board of Vance Industries convened. The news of Julian Ross’s arrest had already rippled through the upper management channels like an electric shock.
I sat beside my father at the head of the boardroom table. Henrik Lindqvist sat across from us, representing Apex Global.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Charles Vance announced, his voice echoing through the silent room. "As you are aware, former Regional Vice President Julian Ross was taken into custody thirty minutes ago by financial crimes investigators. What you do not yet know is that Mr. Ross did not act alone."
A nervous murmur ran through the twenty board members and senior executives seated around the table.
I opened my laptop and projected a organizational matrix onto the large central screens.
"Over the last forty-eight hours," I said, taking command of the room with absolute authority, "Ward Risk Advisory conducted a total sweep of the Midwest executive division. Julian Ross was able to operate his shell company scheme for eighteen months because three key individuals within this corporate structure actively aided him, covered up ledger discrepancies, or accepted financial kickbacks."
I tapped a key. Three names flashed in bright red on the screen:
Arthur Pendelton – Chief Financial Officer, Midwest Division.
Karen Vance-Smith – Senior HR Director (my father's distant cousin).
Serena Blake – Executive Assistant.
Arthur Pendelton, sitting three seats down from me, went dead pale. He stood up so fast his chair screeched against the carpet.
"This is outrageous!" Arthur yelled, gesturing frantically toward me. "Chairman Vance, with all due respect, your daughter is running a personal vendetta after a failed marriage! I have served this company for twenty years! I signed off on those expense reports because Julian assured me they were confidential board acquisitions!"
"Confidential acquisitions that included a fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer to your wife’s personal interior design firm in Naples, Florida?" I asked smoothly, bringing up the bank statement on the screen.
Arthur froze, his hand suspended in mid-air.
"You accepted three separate payments from Blake Logistics LLC, Arthur," I continued, my voice calm, factual, and lethal. "In exchange, you overrode the internal flagging system seven times between March and October."
"Arthur Pendelton," Charles Vance said, his voice dropping into a register of cold finality. "You are terminated immediately for gross breach of fiduciary duty and corporate corruption. Legal counsel will be filing a formal complaint with the SEC before noon."
Arthur looked around the room for support, but every single board member averted their eyes. He slumped his head, grabbed his folder, and shuffled out of the boardroom in absolute disgrace.
Next, I looked toward Karen Vance-Smith, my father’s cousin, who was sitting near the back, trembling.
"Karen," I said softly. "You used your position in Human Resources to alter Serena Blake’s salary grade three times in six months, doubling her base pay without board approval, while ignoring three separate anonymous harassment complaints filed by junior staff regarding Julian’s conduct."
"Elena... we’re family!" Karen pleaded, tears swelling in her eyes. "Julian told me you were okay with everything! He told me you two had an open arrangement!"
"Family does not protect thieves who steal from our workers' pension funds, Karen," I replied firmly. "Your resignation is accepted effective immediately. You will forfeit all unvested stock options."
By 10:00 AM, the purge was complete.
Henrik Lindqvist stood up, holding out his hand to my father, and then to me.
"Mrs. Vance," Henrik said, a genuine smile breaking across his stern face. "Apex Global was hesitant about this merger because of rumors regarding regional instability. Seeing how decisively you excised this cancer from your organization, we are ready to sign the final merger agreement today."
"Thank you, Henrik," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "Vance Industries built its reputation on integrity. It will stay that way."
As the board members filed out, offering their congratulations and admiration, my father stayed behind, looking at me with eyes full of overwhelming pride.

"Your mother would have loved to see you today, Elena," Charles said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "You didn't just save the merger, sweetheart. You saved this family's legacy."
I smiled, looking out the window at the snow falling over the city. "I didn't do it for the legacy, Dad. I did it for Maya."
