Chapter 6 - The Fall of Serena Blake

While Julian faced federal charges in a holding cell downtown, Serena Blake was discovering that being the accomplice to a fallen executive came with an unbearable price.
Stripped of her company-issued apartment, her corporate credit cards frozen, and her reputation in ruins, Serena attempted to flee Chicago by catching an evening flight to Miami.
She didn't make it past the gate at O'Hare Airport.
At 4:00 PM, while sitting in the departure terminal clutching her designer handbag—the only luxury item she had left—two plainclothes officers from the Cook County Sheriff's Department approached her seat.
"Serena Blake?" one officer asked.
Serena pulled her sunglasses down, panic surging through her chest. "Yes? What is this about? I'm boarding a flight!"
"You are being detained under a material witness warrant issued by the State Attorney’s Office in connection with the criminal prosecution of Julian Ross and Blake Logistics LLC," the officer announced, snapping cuffs around her manicured wrists in front of dozens of staring passengers.
"No! You don't understand!" Serena shrieked, struggling as they pulled her up. "I was a victim! Julian tricked me! He gave me that necklace! He told me his wife was nobody!"
"You can explain that to the state prosecutor, ma'am," the officer replied coldly, escorting her down the terminal walkway past whispering crowds.
By 6:00 PM, Serena was sitting in an interrogation room at the Cook County Financial Crimes Division.
The door opened, and Clara Mercer walked in, carrying a thin blue folder. She sat down across from Serena, placing her coffee cup on the metal table.
"Where is Julian?" Serena wept, her designer clothes rumpled and dirty. "Tell Julian to get his lawyers down here!"
"Julian's bail was set at five million dollars cash," Clara said plainly. "He cannot post it. His personal assets have been frozen by federal court order. He is currently represented by a public defender."
Serena’s jaw dropped. "A public defender?! But he's a Senior Vice President!"
"He was a Senior Vice President," Clara corrected her. "Now he is a federal defendant facing up to fifteen years in a maximum-security facility."
Clara opened her folder, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table.
"This is a formal civil lawsuit filed on behalf of Elena Ward Vance," Clara said. "We are suing you for intentional infliction of emotional distress, conversion of stolen estate property, and civil conspiracy."
Serena began to sob uncontrollably, placing her head on the cold metal table. "I don't have any money! Julian spent everything! He took me to expensive hotels, but he didn't give me cash!"
"We know," Clara replied, her voice cold as marble. "Which is why Mrs. Vance has offered you a single choice."
Serena looked up, wiping her swollen eyes. "A choice?"
"Sign a full, sworn affidavit detailing every transaction, every conversation, and every instruction Julian gave you regarding Blake Logistics," Clara stated. "Plead guilty to misdemeanor accessory charges, complete two hundred hours of community service, and agree to testify against Julian at his trial."
"And if I do that?" Serena whispered desperately.
"Elena will waive the civil damages against you," Clara said. "If you refuse... you will be indicted as a co-conspirator in grand larceny alongside Julian tomorrow morning."

Serena didn't hesitate for a single second. She grabbed the pen from Clara’s folder with shaking fingers.
"Give me the paper," Serena cried. "I'll tell you everything he ever said."
