Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Judge

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting sharp golden light across the glass windows of the Dirksen Federal Building downtown.
Inside the chambers of Judge Robert Vance, the atmosphere was thick with triumphant anticipation. Vance sat behind his polished oak desk, a stack of emergency custody petitions sitting neatly beside his morning coffee. Beside him stood his daughter Camille, her face hardened with spite and bruised vanity.
"You have the signature from the emergency magistrate?" Camille asked, tapping her manicured nails against the desk.
"It's already logged," Judge Vance smiled coldly, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "Adrian Vale thinks his family name makes him untouchable. But filing an emergency custody order on the grounds of an active syndicate investigation is a guaranteed win. By noon, those children will be in protective state custody, and Vale will be begging us for a settlement."
Ring.
The judge’s secure desk phone buzzed.
Vance picked up the receiver with a smug grin. "Vance here."
“Judge Vance?” a crisp, automated voice from the U.S. Attorney’s office crackled through the line. “We have federal marshals and compliance auditors standing by in your lobby. You are ordered to remain in your chambers pending an immediate internal review.”
Vance’s smug smile vanished instantly. His blood ran cold. "An internal review? On what grounds? I am a federal magistrate!"
“We have just received a comprehensive financial dossier detailing over two million dollars in illicit kickbacks funneled through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands tied to your docket,” the voice replied flatly. “The warrants were signed thirty minutes ago by the Chief Judge himself.”
The phone slipped from Vance’s trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the wooden desk.
Camille stared at her father in absolute horror as the color drained entirely from his face. "Dad? What is it? What's happening?"
Before the judge could answer, the heavy double doors of his chambers burst open. Two armed federal marshals stepped inside, flanked by an IRS investigator carrying a thick cardboard box.
"Judge Robert Vance," the lead marshal announced, his voice echoing off the paneled walls as he pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, bribery, and corruption of judicial proceedings. Put your hands behind your back."

Camille screamed as her father was hauled out of his chair, his arms wrenched behind him, dragged out of his own chambers in front of the entire building.
The war was over before it even began.
