Chapter 5 - The Corporate Web
Back in Manhattan, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Whitmore & Sons looked less like a monument of power and more like a house of cards caught in a gale. In the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, federal investigators were boxing up files while corporate lawyers frantically shredded documents in the executive washroom.
Vanessa sat at the head of the polished oak table, her makeup streaked with tears of rage and disbelief. Her husband, Richard, had already boarded a private flight to Zurich before the asset-freeze orders were processed, leaving her to face the full weight of the SEC investigation alone.
“Where is my father?” Vanessa demanded, her voice cracking as she glared at the senior corporate counsel standing by the door.
“Mr. Whitmore has officially retired, effective this morning, Ms. Whitmore,” the lawyer said coldly, adjusting his tie. “He has transferred all remaining personal liabilities to the corporate holding entity. As the primary signatory on the Stamford subsidiary accounts, you are the sole defendant named in the preliminary indictment.”
“They set me up!” Vanessa screamed, slamming her fist against the table. “Mother! Tell them it was a corporate restructuring! Tell them Ethan knew!”
Margaret stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the tiny yellow cabs crawling through the Manhattan traffic below. She looked frail, her elegant posture finally broken. She didn’t turn around to look at her daughter.
“Ethan walked away, Vanessa,” Margaret said, her voice barely audible over the hum of the HVAC system. “And he took the only thing that mattered with him.”
“He abandoned us!” Vanessa cried, her voice rising to a hysterical pitch. “We built this empire for him! We gave him everything!”

“No,” a deep, weary voice echoed from the doorway.
Robert Whitmore stood in the entrance, leaning on his cane, his eyes hollow and dead. “We didn’t give him everything, Vanessa. We took everything from him. And now, we’re paying the price.”
