Chapter 10 - The Garden on the Roof

One year later.
On the roof of the eighty-story Crestline Dynamics Tower in downtown Chicago, where cold steel and satellite dishes had once stood alone against the sky, there was now a sprawling, beautiful green garden.
Raised wooden beds were filled with vibrant red tomatoes, sweet basil, blooming sunflowers, and rows of small green plants. Glass greenhouses allowed fresh vegetables to grow year-round, donated directly to local shelters across the city.
It was named The Sarah Cole Community Garden.
On a bright Saturday morning, the roof was filled with life. Employees from every level of Crestline Dynamics—executives, security guards, data analysts, and janitorial staff—were up on the roof with their families, planting seeds and enjoying the sunshine.
Frank, the old security guard from Lakeview, was sitting on a wooden bench, laughing with Malcolm Reed as they shared a plate of fresh pastries.
Nina Patel was showing a group of young interns how the automated drip irrigation system worked—a system designed entirely by Derek Lawson, who was currently kneeling in the dirt, helping a young boy plant sunflower seeds.
At the edge of the garden, looking out over the panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, stood Ethan and Lily.
Lily was ten now, taller, her face filled with the quiet confidence of a child who knew she was deeply, unconditionally loved.
She leaned against the wooden railing, looking down at the city streets far below.
"Dad?" she asked softly.
"Yeah, sweetie?"
"Do you think Mom can see this?"
Ethan put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side. He looked up at the endless blue sky reflecting off the clear waters of the lake.
"I know she can, Lily," Ethan whispered softly, a profound, peaceful warmth filling his chest. "She’s right here. In every seed we plant, in every person we help, and in every single smile on this roof."
Lily looked up at her father, offering him a bright, beautiful smile that mirrored Sarah’s in every conceivable way.
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, shiny green leaf she had picked from one of the plants. She carefully tucked it into the lapel pocket of Ethan’s navy jacket, right beside his silver star pin.
"There," Lily said happily. "Now you’re fully dressed."
Ethan laughed softly, kissing the top of her head.

Below them, the city hustled and flowed—a world of millions of people chasing success, money, and titles. But high above the noise, in a garden built on love, memory, and quiet strength, the man who owned it all held his daughter’s hand and stepped into the warm, golden sunlight.
Home at last.
