Chapter 8 - The Legacy of Sarah

Two months later.
Snow was falling gently over the city of Evanston, covering the quiet streets in a thick, pristine blanket of white.
Inside the two-bedroom apartment, the aroma of roasted chicken and fresh herbs filled the warm air. Classical music played softly from an old radio on the kitchen counter.
In the living room, Malcolm Reed sat on the sofa, holding a cup of tea, watching Lily assemble a massive three-thousand-piece Lego castle on the rug.
"She’s getting taller, Ethan," Malcolm said softly, watching the little girl with fondness. "She looks more like Sarah every day."
Ethan stepped out of the kitchen, wearing a simple sweater, carrying a plate of warm bread. He sat down beside his long-time business partner.
"She has Sarah’s laughter," Ethan said quietly, his eyes glowing with quiet happiness. "And her complete refusal to compromise when she thinks she’s right."
Malcolm smiled, taking a sip of his tea. "The board is thrilled with the quarterly reports, Ethan. The new Ethics Council has already resolved twenty major operational bottlenecks across six divisions. The employees feel heard. Productivity is up fifteen percent."
"Good," Ethan said softly. "That’s how it should have been all along."
"So," Malcolm leaned forward, looking at his old friend intently. "What’s your next move, Chairman? Are you moving into the penthouse suite at headquarters? Or are you going to take over the European operations?"
Ethan looked around his small, cozy living room. He looked at the framed photograph of Sarah sitting on the side table, surrounded by Lily’s colorful drawings and small green plants.
"I’m staying right here, Malcolm," Ethan said peacefully.
Malcolm blinked, surprised. "Here? In Evanston? Ethan, you own a seventy-acre estate in Lake Forest that’s been sitting empty for five years!"
"Big houses have too many empty rooms, Malcolm," Ethan said gently. "This apartment is full of warmth. Lily’s school is three blocks away. Her friends live down the street. And I have everything I need right here."
Ethan looked out the window at the falling snow.
"I’ll step onto the stage when the company needs a rudder," Ethan continued. "I’ll run the board meetings, oversee the major architectural decisions, and protect our people. But my primary job... my most important title... will always be Lily’s dad."
Malcolm looked at Ethan for a long moment, then smiled deeply, raising his tea cup in a silent toast.

"To Sarah," Malcolm whispered.
"To Sarah," Ethan agreed softly, clinking his cup against Malcolm’s.
