Chapter 7 - The Mountain's Grip

Silence fell over the ravine, broken only by the crackle of burning wreckage and the howling wind.

Erin lay in the cold snow, her vision swimming with black spots. Pain flared through her left ribs—at least two were cracked from the force of the blast. Her right arm was burned, her breathing shallow and painful inside her damaged mask.

A cold, wet nose pressed frantically against her neck.

Atlas was digging through the snow above her, whining out loud, his paws working frantically until he cleared the ice from her face.

"Good boy... Atlas..." Erin coughed, struggling to sit up.

She looked across the snowfield. Ten feet away, half-buried in the white drift, lay the silver biohazard case. The digital temperature display had dropped back down to 32.1°F in the mountain snow.

Safe. Contained.

"Erin!" Nolan sprinted through the trees, dropping to his knees beside her, his face covered in soot, his thermal coat soaked with melted snow. "God, Erin! I thought you were dead!"

"Is Maya... is she okay?" Erin rasped, holding her bruised ribs.

"She's alive!" Nolan shouted, tears of relief leaking down his face. "The blood transfusion worked! Her pulse is stabilizing, and Mercer has her wrapped in heating blankets near the rock wall!"

Mercer arrived seconds later, carrying the silver biohazard case he had retrieved from the drift. He looked down at Erin, his eyes full of deep, unutterable pride.

"The case is secure, Valkyrie," Mercer said quietly. "State Police helicopters just managed to break through the lower clouds. They'll be over our position in three minutes."

Erin leaned back against the snowbank, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of exhaustion. She looked up at the gray sky through the pine canopy, feeling the cold snowflakes melting on her hot skin.

For six years, she had believed that running away from Raven Seven was the only way to escape the ghosts of her past. She had believed that her hands were cursed, capable only of holding blood and failure.

But looking at Nolan, who had transformed from an arrogant hospital doctor into a brave combat medic... looking at Mercer and Atlas... and knowing that little Maya was going to live to see her next birthday... Erin realized something profound.

She hadn't been hiding in North Ridge because she was weak.

She had been hiding because she had forgotten who she truly was.
