Chapter 8 - The Return of the Valkyrie

Forty-eight hours later.
The sun broke through the storm clouds over New Jersey, casting a brilliant golden light across the polished glass windows of North Ridge Medical Center.
The news of the Ramapo Mountain rescue had dominated the national headlines. The federal government had safely secured the biological containment unit, and the foreign diplomat and little Maya were both recovering in stable condition in the pediatric intensive care unit.
On the fifth floor, the atmosphere was thick with quiet anticipation.
Erin stood in the staff locker room, wearing her clean navy-blue scrub uniform. Her left ribs were bound with tight compression bandages, and a neat white dressing covered the burn on her right arm.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
The tired, haunted look in her gray-blue eyes had vanished. In its place was a quiet, unshakeable calm—the peace of a soldier who had finally made peace with her own scars.
She pulled up her right sleeve, looking at the tattoo of the broken compass, the three stars, and the black wing. She no longer felt the urge to hide it.
The locker room door opened, and Dr. Nolan Pike stepped inside. He carried two paper cups of coffee.
He set one down on the bench beside her.
"Let me guess," Erin smiled faintly. "Lukewarm?"
Nolan laughed—a genuine, warm sound. "It's piping hot. Made it myself."
He sat down on the bench, looking at her with quiet respect. "The hospital administrator offered me a promotion to Assistant Chief of Emergency Medicine this morning."
Erin turned to him, her eyes brightening. "Nolan! That's incredible! You earned it."
"I told him I'd only take the job on one condition," Nolan said softly, looking her straight in the eyes.
"What condition?"
"That North Ridge creates a brand-new, specialized Mobile Disaster Response Unit... and that Senior Flight Medic Erin Calloway is appointed as the Director."
Erin blinked, taken aback. "Nolan... I—"
"You belong in medicine, Erin," Nolan urged gently. "Not just changing knee bandages on the fifth floor, and not hiding from the world. You saved a little girl's life, you saved this entire region from a biological disaster, and you turned me into a real doctor in six hours. This hospital needs you. I need you."
Erin looked at the coffee cup in her hands, a slow, beautiful smile spreading across her lips.
May you like
"Director of Disaster Response, huh?" Erin mused. "Does that mean I get to order you around in the ER?"
Nolan grinned broadly. "You already do anyway."
