Chapter 10 - The Unspoken Vow

One year later.
The bells of the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte rang out over the city of Florence, their deep, bronze tones echoing across the terracotta rooftops and winding river below.
The afternoon sun was a brilliant, blinding gold, casting a warm glow over the stone courtyard of a private sixteenth-century villa nestled high in the hills overlooking the city.
The courtyard was filled with white roses, blooming jasmine, and eighty guests—friends, local shopkeepers, reformed associates, and family who had gathered to witness a miracle.
Standing at the front of the altar under an archway of white orchids stood Matteo. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo tailored to absolute perfection. He looked magnificent, regal, and entirely at peace, his hands folded in front of him, his dark eyes fixed on the wooden doors at the end of the stone aisle.
The heavy doors opened.
Soft violin music filled the warm air.
Tessa walked down the aisle on the arm of her brother, Daniel. She wore a breathtaking white silk gown that flowed around her like liquid light, with a long lace veil trailing softly behind her against the ancient flagstones. Her blond hair was pinned back with small pearl clips, and her face was radiant with a beauty so pure it made grown men in the audience wipe away tears.
When Daniel placed her hand in Matteo’s, Matteo reached out and gently lifted her veil.
His breath caught in his throat. For a long second, the powerful former Don could only stare at her, overwhelmed by a love so profound it filled every corner of his being.
"You take my breath away," he whispered into the quiet air between them.
Tessa smiled, her eyes shining with happiness. "You don't look so bad yourself, Signor Moretti."
The old Italian priest stepped forward, his voice warm and gentle as he spoke the ancient traditional vows of marriage in rich, sonorous Italian.
When it came time for the personal vows, Matteo took both of Tessa’s hands in his. He didn't look at a piece of paper; he looked directly into her eyes.
"Tessa," Matteo spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly over the silent courtyard. "When I first met you in a restaurant in Chicago, I thought you were just a server in cheap shoes. I tried to buy your silence with five thousand dollars. But you showed me something I didn't know existed: a dignity that couldn't be bought, and a heart that couldn't be broken."
He squeezed her hands tightly.
"I give you my life, my honor, and my protection," Matteo swore, his voice trembling with deep emotion. "I promise to listen to you, to honor you, and to love you through every storm and every sunrise, for as long as I draw breath."
Tessa looked up at him, her heart overflowing with a happiness so vast it felt like the entire world was singing.
"Matteo," she said, her voice clear, confident, and full of love. "You came into my life when I was drowning in fear and debt. You thought you were dragging me into your darkness, but instead, you let me see the nobility inside your soul. You gave up an empire to keep me safe. Today, I give you my heart, my trust, and my future. You are my home, Matteo. Forever."
"By the authority vested in me," the priest declared, smiling broadly, "Vi dichiaro marito e moglie. I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Matteo didn't wait a single second.
He pulled Tessa into his arms, dipping her slightly as he brought his lips down to hers in a magnificent, passionate kiss that sealed their lives together forever.
The courtyard exploded into deafening applause, cheers, and shower after shower of white rose petals floating down through the golden light.
Later that evening, as the sun set behind the Tuscan hills, turning the sky into a canvas of deep violet, crimson, and gold, Matteo and Tessa stood alone at the edge of the villa’s high stone terrace.
Below them, the lights of Florence began to twinkle like a fallen galaxy of stars.
Tessa leaned back against Matteo’s chest, her hand resting over his where it wrapped around her waist, her platinum wedding ring glittering in the twilight.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly, turning her head to look up at his profile.
Matteo smiled, kissing the top of her forehead, his eyes looking out over the peaceful, beautiful city below them.
"I was thinking about the night at Il Cavallo Bianco," Matteo murmured softly, a touch of gentle wit in his deep voice. "When I asked you how much you spent of my five thousand dollars."
Tessa laughed softly, a bright, musical sound that carried on the evening breeze. "And what did I tell you?"
May you like
"You told me it was none of my business," Matteo smiled, pulling her closer against his heart. "And you were entirely right. Because everything I have—my money, my life, my heart—was already yours."
Hand in hand, husband and wife walked back into the warm, glowing light of the villa, leaving every shadow of the past behind forever, stepping together into a lifetime of endless, brilliant tomorrows.
