Chapter 5 - The Siege of 22nd Street

At 3:00 AM, the clock tower’s silent alarm flared red.
Tessa woke instantly in the master bedroom as the heavy iron door burst open. Matteo stepped inside, fully dressed in black tactical gear, holding a heavy pistol in his hand.
"They found us," Matteo said, his voice cold and precise. "Rossi hired a crew of local hitmen. They bypassed the street cameras by coming through the underground subway tunnels."
Tessa sat up, throwing off the blankets. "How many?"
"Eight," Matteo replied. "Marco and the perimeter team are holding the elevator shaft, but they brought industrial breach charges. We need to move to the roof."
Before Tessa could reach for her shoes, a thunderous explosion rocked the building, sending plaster dust raining down from the high ceilings. The lights flickered and died, plunging the floor into red emergency lighting.
The sound of automatic gunfire echoed up the elevator shaft.
Matteo grabbed Tessa’s hand, pulling her out of the bedroom and toward the metal spiral staircase leading to the roof helipad.
As they reached the base of the stairs, the heavy reinforced door at the end of the hallway was blown inward with a deafening crack. Three men in black tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons raised.
"Moretti!" one of them shouted, opening fire.
Matteo shoved Tessa behind a steel structural pillar, returning fire with terrifying precision. Two of the attackers collapsed instantly under his shots, but the third managed to spray a volley of bullets that chipped away the concrete pillar inches from Matteo’s head.
"Tessa! The ladder behind you!" Matteo yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire. "Get to the roof! The chopper is three minutes away!"
"I'm not leaving you!" she screamed back.
"Go!"
Tessa looked around frantically. On the floor beside her lay an overturned iron fire extinguisher. Without thinking, she grabbed the heavy cylinder, pulled the safety pin, and stepped out from behind the pillar just as the third gunman advanced on Matteo’s position.
She slammed the nozzle down, discharging a massive cloud of blinding white chemical foam directly into the gunman’s face.
The man gasped, blinded and disoriented, dropping his weapon.
Matteo didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, sweeping the man’s legs out from under him and knocking him unconscious with a heavy blow to the jaw.
Matteo stood up, breathing hard, looking at Tessa holding the empty fire extinguisher with a look of pure shock and awe.
"You are incredible," Matteo breathed, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her toward the rooftop stairs.
They burst through the heavy roof hatch into the cold night rain. The sound of a helicopter’s rotors echoed through the dark sky as a sleek black aircraft hovered just feet above the landing pad.
Marco was already on the roof, holding off two more attackers coming up the outer fire escape.
"Get in, Boss!" Marco yelled, opening the helicopter door.
Matteo lifted Tessa into the cabin, then turned back to pull Marco inside just as bullets slammed against the armored hull of the aircraft.
"Go! Go! Go!" Matteo ordered the pilot.
The helicopter lifted off into the stormy night sky, pulling away from the clock tower as explosions ripped through the upper floors below.
Tessa pressed her back against the seat, looking down at the burning building through the rain-slicked glass. She felt Matteo’s warm hand wrap tightly around hers, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.
"It's over," Matteo said softly over the roar of the engines. "Rossi’s entire crew was inside that building. My team on the ground just confirmed he was captured trying to flee through the subway tunnels."
Tessa looked at Matteo. His face was smeared with soot and rain, his tactical vest torn, but his eyes were filled with an absolute, unshakeable peace.
"Where are we going?" she asked softly.
May you like
Matteo smiled—a genuine, warm smile that transformed his harsh features completely.
"Somewhere far away from Chicago," he said gently, raising her hand to his lips and pressing a soft kiss to her knuckles. "Somewhere where you never have to serve another table, and where I never have to carry another gun."
