Chapter 2 - The Audit Unfolds

Hale stumbled out of his chair, his hands shaking violently as he stared at me. "This... this is absurd! You're a janitor! I've seen you scrubbing blood off the OR floors for six weeks!"

"Six weeks during which you performed forty-two surgeries," I replied, stepping around my bucket and taking the high-backed leather chair at the head of the board table—the chair reserved exclusively for the owner of the medical center. "Six weeks during which I watched you rush patients through pre-op without proper consent, ignore sterile field protocols, and pressure frightened elderly people into unnecessary spinal fusions."

I gestured to Marcus, who opened a leather briefing folder and began distributing thick white dossiers to every board member sitting at the table.

"Page four, gentlemen," I continued, resting my hands on the table. "A complete ledger of duplicate implant billing managed by Chief Financial Officer Melissa Crane. Single-use orthopedic screws billed three times to Medicare under different patient IDs. Expired cardiac stents relabeled and placed inside patients who came in for simple observation."

Melissa Crane began to hyperventilate. "Elias... Mr. Grant... please! I was only following executive directives! Mr. Vance told me to cut operational costs by fifteen percent—"

"I never told you to commit federal fraud, Melissa!" CEO Arthur Vance yelled, turning on her like a cornered animal. "Sir, I had no knowledge of this! None at all! Hale and Crane operated independently!"

"Save it, Arthur," I said, leaning back in my chair. "I stood in the second-floor utility closet three nights ago while you told Melissa to shred the post-operative mortality logs for OR Four. You thought I was just the old man emptying the shredder bins. You even dropped a ten-dollar bill on the floor and told me to buy myself a decent meal."

Arthur Vance collapsed back into his chair, his face turned ash-gray, completely speechless.

The double doors swung open again. Four federal marshals stepped into the room, accompanied by Detective Sarah Reyes from the State Medical Fraud Unit.

"Dr. Victor Hale, Melissa Crane, Arthur Vance," Detective Reyes announced, pulling out three sets of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal healthcare fraud, reckless endangerment, destruction of evidence, and conspiracy."

Hale looked at me as the cold iron locked around his wrists. The arrogance that had defined him for years had vanished, replaced by a hollow, pathetic terror.

"Who are you?" Hale whispered, his voice cracking. "What kind of billionaire plays a janitor?"

"A man who believes that those who clean up messes should know where they come from," I said softly. "Take them away."
