Chapter 5 - The Reunion in the Rain

The rain in Gary tasted like iron. Bella rushed down the cracked sidewalk, her arms wrapped tightly around Liam, who was bundled in a heavy, damp blanket. His breathing was shallow, a terrifying rattling sound coming from his chest with every breath. Clara hurried beside her, holding onto the hem of Bella’s canvas jacket, her small boots splashing through the puddles.
"Almost there, Liam," Bella whispered, her tears mixing with the rain on her face. "The clinic is just two blocks away. Mommy has the money now. They’ll fix you." She had begged George for a two-week advance on her cash pay, barely enough to cover the emergency room admission fee.
As she reached the corner of 4th Avenue, a massive, black armored SUV pulled smoothly onto the curb, blocking the crosswalk. Two more black vehicles pulled in behind it, their headlights cutting through the gray mist like searchlights.
Bella stopped, her heart seizing with an old, familiar terror. She tried to step backward, to turn into an alleyway, but the doors of the lead vehicle opened, and three men in tailored black coats stepped out.
In the center of them stood Lucas Dracott.
He looked exactly as he did three years ago, but more imposing, his presence completely dominating the desolate industrial street. He didn't wear a hat, and the rain slicked his dark hair back, highlighting the sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw.
"Bella," he said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the sound of the rain with absolute authority.
Bella instinctively pressed Liam tighter against her shoulder, her arm reaching down to pull Clara behind her legs. "Lucas," she gasped, her voice trembling. "What... what are you doing here? How did you find me?"
"You took my card, you cleared your mother’s debt, and then you ran," Lucas said, taking a slow step forward. His eyes didn't look at her face; they went straight to the bundle in her arms, then down to the little girl peering out from behind her trousers. When he saw Liam’s face—the pale skin, the struggling breath, and those storm-gray eyes—Lucas’s chest heaved. "You hid my children in a place like this?"
"They are my children!" Bella shouted back, her pride rising over her fear. "You paid me for a night, Lucas! You didn't buy my life, and you didn't buy them! Leave us alone!"
"He needs a doctor, Bella," Lucas said, his tone changing from anger to a sudden, command that left no room for argument. He stepped closer, his long arms reaching out. "Look at him. He’s turning blue. You want to fight me out here in the rain while my son suffocates, or are you going to get into the car?"
Liam let out a sharp, agonized cough, his small body shaking.
Bella looked at Lucas’s face, searching for the cruelty she had feared for three years. All she saw was an intense, desperate focus directed entirely at the sick boy. She looked at her daughter, who was shivering from the cold rain.
She had no choice. The door had closed again, and Lucas Dracott was the only one who could open it.
"Help him," Bella whispered, her voice breaking.
Lucas didn't hesitate. He took Liam from her arms, handling the fragile child with a surprising, gentle precision that Bella hadn't expected from a mafia boss. He tucked the boy under his heavy wool coat, protecting him from the wind, and opened the door to the armored SUV.

"Marcus, call the pediatric unit at Northwestern Memorial," Lucas ordered as he climbed into the back seat with the child. "Tell them Dracott’s son is coming in. If the medical staff isn't waiting on the helipad when we arrive, I’ll buy the hospital just to fire everyone on the shift."
Bella grabbed Clara and climbed into the plush, leather interior beside him, the heavy door shutting out the iron-tasting rain, sealing them back into the world of Lucas Dracott.
