Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Records

The security inside the Lake Forest estate was absolute, but the tension within the house was thick enough to feel. Marcus Vance sat in the private security room, his head bandaged from the highway crash, his fingers flying across the keys of a decrypted database terminal.
"Lucas," Marcus said as Lucas entered the room, leaving Bella and the kids in the kitchen with the private chef. "We pulled the dental and fingerprint records from the driver of that sedan on the highway. He was an old enforcer for Donald Vance."
Lucas’s eyes narrowed into two slits of cold steel. "Donald Vance? He was supposed to have fled to South America after the fire twenty-five years ago. Why is he back in Chicago trying to kill my children?"
"Because of this," Marcus said, pulling up a scanned document from a local orphanage in Indiana dated 2004. "Donald wasn't trying to kill your kids out of revenge, Lucas. He was trying to protect a secret. Twenty-five years ago, your uncle Wendell’s daughter—your cousin, Elena—didn't die in that car explosion."
Lucas froze, his hand tightening around the back of the security chair. "What did you say? Elena survived?"
"She was thrown from the vehicle before it ignited," Marcus explained, pointing to the orphanage intake records. "She was raised under a fake name by a local family in Gary. Donald Vance found her five years ago, but he kept her hidden because under the original Dracott Maritime charter, if Elena is alive, she inherits forty percent of the company’s voting stock. Donald wanted to use her to execute a hostile takeover. But if you have legitimate heirs—like Liam and Clara—their birth rights supersede Elena’s claim under the family trust."
"Where is she, Marcus?" Lucas demanded, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register that signaled someone was about to stop existing. "Where is my cousin?"
Marcus looked up from the screen, his face pale under his bandages. "That's the part that’s going to break your heart, Lucas. Look at the intake photograph from the orphanage."
He clicked the mouse, and a grainy, black-and-white photo appeared on the screen. It was a three-year-old girl with a small, distinct birthmark shaped like a crescent moon just behind her left ear.
Lucas stared at the screen, his breath stopping entirely in his lungs. He knew that birthmark. He had seen it every single day for the past week while brushing his daughter’s hair.
"No," Lucas whispered, his mind spinning out of control. "Clara... Clara has that birthmark."
"Not Clara, Lucas," Marcus corrected him gently, his voice thick with a sudden, overwhelming emotion. "Look at the mother’s records. Elena was adopted by a woman named Helena Kovalchuk. She was renamed... Bella."

The room went entirely silent.
Lucas stepped back from the console, his head shaking in absolute disbelief. The woman he had paid forty-nine thousand dollars to for a single night... the woman who had cleaned his floors... she wasn't a stranger. She was the little girl he thought had burned to death in the back seat of that car twenty-five years ago. She was his cousin. The family he thought the fire had taken hadn't been destroyed; it had been waiting for him in a gray cleaning uniform, handing him a stack of white towels in the dark.
