Chapter 8 - The Final Reckoning

Within forty-eight hours, the federal government launched the largest coordinated syndicate raid on the East Coast in twenty years.
Armed with the precise, encrypted ledgers provided by Damian, state troopers and federal agents descended upon Vasily’s strongholds in New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. By midnight on Saturday, Vasily and twenty-four of his high-ranking lieutenants were in federal custody, facing mandatory life sentences with zero possibility of bail.
The threat that had hung over the Volkov name for a generation was completely, permanently erased.
On Sunday morning, the lead federal prosecutor, a sharp-faced man named Attorney Vance (the brother of the disgraced doctor who had once been fired from Grayhaven), personally delivered the signed immunity papers to Grayhaven House.
Sitting in the grand library, Prosecutor Vance signed the final document, sliding the gold-sealed folder across the table to Damian.
"You’re a free man, Mr. Volkov," Vance said, shaking his head in disbelief. "In my twenty years at the Justice Department, I’ve never seen a man clean his slate so thoroughly. You gave us the biggest syndicate bust in a decade."
"I had strong motivation to clean my house, Prosecutor," Damian replied smoothly, picking up the pen and signing his own name at the bottom.
Vance looked past Damian toward the large sunlit bay window, where Mara was sitting on a plush sofa, helping Lila trace letters in a colorful reading book. The little girl was laughing, pointing to a picture of an elephant and making a funny face.
"So I see," Vance said softly, a rare smile touching his stern lips. "You’re a lucky man, Volkov."
"Luck had nothing to do with it," Damian said, watching his daughter and wife with deep, infinite pride. "It was grace."
After the prosecutor departed, Damian walked over to the sofa, sitting down beside Mara. He leaned down and kissed her cheek, then pulled Lila onto his lap.

"It is done," Damian whispered against Mara’s hair. "We are clean. The past is dead, and the future is ours."
Mara laid her head against his chest, listening to the deep, steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. It was a strong heart now—a heart that beat with purpose, with strength, and with boundless love for the family he had almost lost before he even knew they existed.
