Chapter 9 - The Gift of Sound

Six months later.
The quiet waiting room at Johns Hopkins Medical Center was bright, warm, and bathed in morning sunlight.
Mara sat on a leather sofa, clutching Damian’s hand tightly. Her knuckles were white with nervousness. Across the room, the chief pediatric audiologist, Dr. Helen Vance, was carefully adjusting the small, sleek, state-of-the-art processors fitted behind both of Lila’s ears.
Lila sat on an examination table, wearing a tiny pink dress, holding her beloved cloth rabbit. Her surgical incisions had healed completely, and today was the day her brand-new bilateral auditory implants were being activated for the very first time.
"Alright, Lila," Dr. Vance said warmly, holding a small computer tablet connected wirelessly to the processors. "We are going to turn on the left side first. You might feel a strange sensation, or hear a soft sound. Don't be scared."
Dr. Vance pressed a key on her tablet.
Lila’s eyes went wide. She gasped softly, her hand instantly flying up to touch her left ear. She looked around the room in wonder, her small breath catching in her throat.
"Now the right side," Dr. Vance whispered, pressing another key.
The world, which had been silent to Lila for four long years, suddenly erupted into a rich, glorious symphony of sound: the quiet hum of the air conditioner, the soft rustle of her dress, the distant chirp of birds outside the window, and the warm, heavy breathing of the people who loved her.
Damian stepped forward, dropping to his knees beside the examination table so he was directly at eye level with the little girl.
He looked into her bright blue eyes, his face filled with an emotion so deep it made his throat tighten.
"Lila," Damian said softly. His voice was low, deep, and rich with love.
Lila blinked. She froze, staring at his mouth, then pointing at his chest. She realized the low, warm vibration she had felt through his ribs for months was now coming through the air into her ears.
"Can you hear me, my sweet girl?" Damian whispered, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.
Lila’s face broke into the most magnificent, radiant smile the room had ever seen. Tears spilled over her tiny eyelashes as she let out a sweet, high-pitched laugh—a sound she could finally hear herself make.
"Da... mian," Lila squeaked out, her voice raw, hesitant, but perfectly clear. "Da-day!"
Mara burst into tears, covering her mouth with her hands as she dropped to her knees beside Damian.

Damian pulled both of them into his arms, holding them so tightly against his broad chest that their hearts seemed to beat as a single, unified pulse. He kissed Lila’s forehead over and over again, weeping openly without a single shred of shame.
"I hear you, baby," Damian choked out, his arms wrapped securely around his daughter and wife. "I hear you."
