Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

At 1:00 AM, the Castelli limousine pulled into the secure courtyard of the estate.
The rain had begun to fall over Lake Michigan, tapping rhythmic patterns against the tinted windows. Inside the car, the silence was heavy, charged with an undeniable, simmering tension that had been building between Dominic and Harper all evening.
Dominic leaned back against the leather seat, unbuttoning his tuxedo collar and loosening his bow tie.
“You held your ground tonight,” he said, looking at her through the dim interior light. “Most women would have panicked when I put Paulo against the pillar.”
Harper turned toward him, her emerald gown rustling softly. “I spent five years working high-end events, Dominic. I’ve seen rich, powerful men act like animals. The only difference between them and you is that you don't pretend to be a gentleman when someone threatens what’s yours.”
Dominic’s amber eyes darkened. He reached out, his long fingers gently tracing the line of her jawline.
“Is that what I’m doing?” he asked softly. “Protecting what’s mine?”
Harper’s breath hitched. Her heart began to race—not with fear, but with a wild, intoxicating heat that made her skin tingle where his fingers touched.
“Isn't that what this fake engagement is about?” she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. “A business strategy?”
Dominic leaned closer, his dark shadow enveloping her once again. “It started as a strategy, Harper. But when I watch you stand up to men who make city councilmen tremble... I realize it’s becoming something else.”
Before Harper could answer, the limousine door was opened by Matteo.
“Don Castelli,” Matteo said, his expression grim as he held an umbrella over the door. “We have a problem in the south warehouse. Someone set fire to the freight docks twenty minutes ago.”
Dominic’s warm, intimate demeanor vanished instantly. He pulled back, his eyes hardening into flint.
“Marino,” Dominic said coldly.
He turned to Harper, taking her gloved hand and pressing a firm, warm kiss against her knuckles. “Matteo will escort you inside. Stay in the west wing until I return.”
“Dominic, be careful,” Harper said impulsively, her hand lingering in his.
Dominic looked at her for a long second, a faint, dangerous smile touching his lips. “I’m always careful, Harper. It’s Lorenzo Marino who should be praying.”
He stepped out of the limousine into the pouring rain, pulling his coat around his shoulders, and disappeared into a black SUV alongside three armed guards.
Harper walked up the stone steps of the mansion, accompanied by Matteo and four security men.
As she stepped into the grand foyer, Nonna Rosa was waiting for her, wrapped in her floral robe, holding a cup of chamomile tea.
“He went to the docks?” Nonna Rosa asked quietly.
“Yes,” Harper replied, feeling a knot of cold anxiety tightening in her stomach.
Nonna Rosa walked over, taking Harper’s hand and patting the heavy diamond ring on her finger. “Do not worry, child. Dominic has been fighting wolves since he was sixteen years old. But tonight, for the first time... he has something worth coming home to.”

She was falling in love with the most feared man in Chicago.
