Chapter 4 - An Offer in the Shadows

A slow, appreciative smile touched the corners of Alessandro’s mouth—not a cruel smile, but one of deep, unexpected respect.

“Pride,” he murmured, folding his arms across his broad chest. “A rare commodity in this house, Mrs. Bennett. Very well. Then consider it not charity, but a contract.”

I frowned, narrowing my eyes. “A contract for what? I’m a housekeeper, Mr. Moretti. I clean floors, wash windows, and mend uniforms. I don't know anything about your business.”

“That,” Alessandro replied smoothly, “is precisely why you are uniquely qualified for the job I have in mind.”

Mateo stepped closer, holding a heavy leather binder under his arm.

“The Moretti household employs forty-seven domestic staff,” Alessandro explained, pacing slowly across the marble floor. “Cooks, maids, gardeners, security valets. For the past year, I’ve suspected that at least one of them has been passing operational intel to rival syndicates—specifically the Milanese council led by the Rossi family. Marco was using internal leaks; someone inside my home was feeding him the schedules.”

My stomach tightened. “You think... one of the other servants is a spy?”

“I know one of them is,” Alessandro said bluntly. “And unlike Marco, who operated in the executive suites, a domestic spy blends into the wallpaper. They listen to phone calls left on desks, read documents tossed in wastebaskets, and notice who visits my private study.”

He stopped walking and stood directly in front of me, looking down with intense, magnetic seriousness.

“You survived two years as a widow in the slums of Milan without asking for a single handout. You protect your daughter with the ferocity of a wolf. You notice details—like a hidden stitch in a thrift-store toy that everyone else ignored.” Alessandro paused, his voice dropping. “I need a head housekeeper. Someone with discretion, intelligence, and absolute loyalty. I want you to run this estate’s domestic operations.”

I stared at him, my mind racing. Run Villa Moretti? Manage forty-seven staff members in the heart of the most dangerous mafia stronghold in Europe? It was insane. It was dangerous.

And it would pay enough to get Emma out of our damp, roach-infested basement apartment forever.

“And if I refuse?” I asked quietly.

“Then you leave tonight with your standard hourly wage, and I assign another maid to scrub these floors tomorrow,” Alessandro replied without missing a beat. “You return to your life of scraping by, dodging landlords, and wondering if you’ll be able to afford groceries next week.”

He hit every nerve with pinpoint accuracy. He knew my vulnerabilities, just as he knew how to crush his enemies.

I looked down at Emma. She was half-asleep against my leg, clutching her blue rabbit pouch like a security blanket. She deserved a warm bedroom, proper schooling, and shoes that didn't leak when it rained.

“What about the danger?” I asked, looking straight back into his gray eyes. “If there’s a spy in this house, and I start sniffing around... won't I be a target?”

“You will report directly to me,” Alessandro said, his tone turning absolute. “No one else. Not my chief of security, not my lieutenants. If anyone threatens you—anyone at all—they answer to me personally. You will have the full authority of the Moretti name backing your position.”

I took a deep breath, feeling the precipice of a completely new life opening beneath my feet.

“When do I start?” I asked.

A shadow of a genuine smile crossed Alessandro’s face. “Tomorrow morning, Mrs. Bennett. Welcome to Villa Moretti.”
