Chapter 8 - Midnight in the Study

That night, the mansion fell into an eerie, heavy slumber. The wind howled outside against the stone walls of Crescent Mill Drive, bringing a stinging winter sleet that battered the stained-glass windows.
I couldn't sleep.
The weight of the silver signet ring on my finger felt hot against my skin. I slipped out of my quarters on the second-floor staff wing, wearing a dark cashmere sweater and soft wool trousers, and made my way silently down the winding marble staircase toward Alessandro’s private study on the ground floor.
The heavy oak door was ajar. A single sliver of warm golden light spilled out onto the dark hallway floor.
I paused outside, about to turn back, when I heard voices murmuring from within.
One belonged to Alessandro—low, controlled, and dangerous.
The second voice... belonged to someone I didn't expect to hear awake at midnight.
“You’re moving too fast, Alessandro,” a smooth, feminine voice cautioned. It was Elena Moretti, Alessandro’s cousin and the head of the syndicate’s European legal acquisitions. “Executing Marco and locking up Luciano in one week has the other eleven families on edge. They think you’re purging the old guard to seize total control.”
“Let them think what they want,” Alessandro replied coldly. “The syndicate has been rotting from the inside for three years. If I don't cut out the rot, the entire organization collapses from federal indictments within six months.”
“And what about the domestic staff?” Elena pressed, her footsteps pacing softly across the Persian rug. “You’ve given unprecedented authority to that housekeeper—Judith Bennett. She’s an outsider, Alessandro. A civilian with a child. How do you know she isn't leaking information to the prosecutors herself?”
I froze in the shadows of the doorway. My breath caught in my throat.
“Judith is clean,” Alessandro said instantly, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable conviction that sent a warm, strange thrill through my chest. “She risked her own safety to protect her child, and she exposed Luciano before he could wipe his drives. She has more integrity in her little finger than half the capos sitting on the council.”
“Integrity doesn't survive in our world, cousin,” Elena sighed. “Be careful she doesn't become a weakness for you. In our position, attachments are fatal liabilities.”
“I don't have weaknesses, Elena,” Alessandro said, his tone dropping into an icy finality. “I have strategy.”
I stepped back silently into the darkness of the corridor, my mind racing. Strategy. To him, I was an asset, a tool used to clean house, a sharp instrument wielded against the syndicate’s traitors. I had to remind myself of the brutal reality: I was a housekeeper, and he was a mafia king. No matter how gentle his touch had been with Emma, no matter how respectful his gaze, our worlds were separated by an abyss of blood, money, and violence.
Suddenly, a heavy hand gripped my shoulder from behind.
I spun around, suppressing a gasp, my fist instinctively flying upward. A strong pair of fingers caught my wrist mid-air with effortless precision.
It was Alessandro.

He stood in the dim corridor, towering over me, his gray eyes glinting with quiet intensity in the moonlight streaming through the high arched window.
“Sneaking around the study at midnight, Mrs. Bennett?” he asked, a faint, dangerous smile playing on his lips, though his grip on my wrist remained firm yet gentle. “That’s a dangerous game for a civilian.”
