Chapter 10 - THE WINTER SKY

One year later.

The morning sun rose over the quiet, snow-dusted hills surrounding our new home—a restored rustic farmhouse situated on ten acres of land near the lake, miles away from the cold marble halls of Vale Manor.

Inside the warm, sunlit kitchen, the air was rich with the sweet smell of fresh cinnamon rolls and hot coffee. Colorful birthday banners hung across the timber beams, reading: HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY, ARTHUR!

George sat in an armchair by the stone fireplace, smiling softly as he held Arthur on his lap. My son was now a happy, active one-year-old, babbling cheerfully while pointing at the snow falling outside the large picture window.

"Look at that, Arthur," George whispered, bouncing his grandson gently on his knee. "That’s winter snow. Just like your eyes."

Ethan walked up behind my chair, sliding his arms around my waist, resting his chin gently against my shoulder as I iced the birthday cake.

"Happy?" Ethan asked softly, pressing a gentle kiss against my neck.

I leaned back against his chest, watching my father-in-law laugh with my son by the fire. The anxiety, horror, and pain of the past year had dissolved completely, replaced by a deep, immovable peace.

"Very happy," I replied, turning my head to smile at him.

"Thank you, Clara," Ethan whispered, his eyes shining with deep sincerity. "For not giving up on me when I was too weak to see the truth. For saving our son."

"We saved each other, Ethan," I said gently. "We just needed to see clearly."

Arthur let out a loud, joyful giggle from the fireplace, clapping his small hands together as George showed him a wooden toy car.

He turned toward us, his face lit up by the warm golden glow of the hearth. His eyes—those translucent, magnificent gray-blue eyes that had once terrified a broken family—shone brightly like the winter sky before a fresh, beautiful snow.
