Chapter 6 - ETHAN’S RECKONING

The kitchen fell into a deathly silence. The ticking of the wall clock sounded like a sledgehammer striking concrete.
Ethan stared at the papers, his breathing coming fast and shallow. The illusion he had lived under for thirty-two years—the belief that his mother was an infallible, noble matriarch protecting a pristine legacy—was shattering into jagged pieces right before his eyes.
"She... she locked her sister-in-law away?" Ethan whispered, his hands trembling as he touched the photo of young Evelyn. "Dad's sister?"
"She erased a human being because of her eye color and her hearing," I said. "And the moment Arthur was born with those exact same eyes, Victoria realized that nature had sent a bill she couldn't burn."
"Clara..." Ethan looked up at me, tears streaming down his face, genuine terror in his eyes. "What have I done?"
"You stood by while she treated your wife like an adulteress," I said without a trace of pity. "You let her swab your son like a criminal. You signed a legal document today to strip me of my rights to this home."
Ethan jumped up, grabbing the petition papers Victoria's lawyers had drafted, and tore them in half, then four, throwing the shreds into the trash bin.
"I didn't know!" he sobbed, dropping to his knees before me, burying his face in his hands. "I swear to God, Clara, I didn't know! I thought my mother was trying to protect us! I’ve been so blind... so stupid..."
I looked down at my kneeling husband. The anger in my chest didn't vanish, but it shifted into something razor-sharp and utilitarian.
"Regret doesn't fix this, Ethan," I said firmly. "Your mother has a family dinner scheduled at the estate tomorrow night to celebrate the firm's quarterly real estate acquisitions. Every influential figure in the county will be there."
Ethan looked up, wiping his wet face. "What do you want me to do?"
"You are going to stand up as a father for the first time in your life," I commanded. "We are going to that dinner. You, me, and Arthur. And you are going to make a choice between the woman who built a life on lies, and the son who carries your blood."

Ethan took a ragged breath, straightened his back, and looked at me with a determination I had never seen in his eyes before.
"Tell me what to do," he said.
