Chapter 8 - First Steps

Two weeks after Decker’s arrest, a package arrived at Sydney’s house in Noe Valley.

It was not a legal summons or a check. It was a thick, leather-bound binder containing every medical payment record, house deed, and trust fund setup Darwin’s lawyers had drafted. Attached was a handwritten note from Darwin:

Sydney,

I know money can never replace six years of stolen time, missed first steps, or the sleepless nights you spent worrying alone. I have set up an irrevocable trust for Xavier and Alicia that only you control. I have no control over it, nor do I demand visitation rights in exchange for it. It is simply what they were always owed.

If you ever decide to let me buy them an ice cream or see them play at the park, I will be waiting.

— Darwin

Sydney sat at her kitchen table, reading the note over and over. Beside her, Claire poured two cups of coffee.

"He's not fighting you for custody, Syd," Claire said softly. "He could have brought a army of lawyers to force visitation, but he gave all the power to you."

Sydney looked out the window. In the backyard, Xavier and Alicia were playing tag, their laughter ringing through the quiet afternoon air.

"He protected us from Decker," Sydney admitted softly. "And he dismantled his own family company just to clear my name."

"Do you still love him?" Claire asked directly.

Sydney closed her eyes. "I loved the man I married six years ago. But that man let his uncle break us. I don't know who Darwin is today."

"Maybe it's time to find out," Claire suggested gently. "Not for the money, Syd. For Xavier and Alicia. They deserve to know a father who is willing to burn down his empire just to earn the right to stand near them."

That evening, Sydney picked up her phone and dialed Darwin’s private line.

He answered on the first ring. "Sydney?"

"Golden Gate Park," Sydney said, her voice steady. "Tomorrow at 3:00 PM near the carousel. Don't wear a suit."
