Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Park
The afternoon sun filtered through the eucalyptus trees of Golden Gate Park. Children were riding the painted horses on the vintage carousel, their laughter mingling with the mechanical organ music.
Darwin stood near a wooden bench, wearing simple jeans and a dark gray sweater—looking more like the young college student Sydney had met years ago than the CEO of a billion-dollar conglomerate.
When he saw Sydney walking down the path holding Xavier and Alicia’s hands, his heart slammed against his ribs.
"Hi," Darwin said softly as they stopped a few feet away.
Xavier looked at Darwin suspiciously, clutching his dinosaur toy, while Alicia peeked out from behind Sydney’s coat, her gray eyes staring directly into his.
"Children," Sydney said gently, kneeling down to their level. "This is... this is Darwin. He's a friend of mine from a long time ago."
Alicia stepped forward slightly. "Why do you have eyes like mine?" she asked innocently.
Darwin’s throat tightened, a tear threatening to spill over. He dropped to one knee so he was at eye level with her. "Because... a long time ago, your mother and I shared a very special dream. And you have your grandmother's eyes, Alicia."
Xavier stepped in front of his sister defensively. "Did you make my mommy cry at the restaurant?"
Darwin looked Xavier directly in the eye, nodding honestly. "Yes, Xavier. I made a terrible mistake a long time ago, and I made your mommy very sad. I am here today to tell her how sorry I am, and to ask if I can help protect both of you from now on."
Xavier contemplated this for a moment, looking at his mother. Sydney gave him a small, reassuring nod.
"Can you buy us ice cream?" Xavier asked abruptly.
Darwin let out a watery laugh, wiping his eyes. "I can buy you all the ice cream in San Francisco."

For the next two hours, the grand CEO of Worthington Enterprise walked through the park holding two strawberry ice cream cones, listening to Xavier explain the difference between a Tyrannosaurus and a Triceratops, while Alicia proudly showed him her stuffed bunny.
Sydney walked a few steps behind them, watching Darwin laugh as Xavier accidentally dropped a scoop of ice cream on his sneaker. For the first time in six years, the heavy weight of pain in her chest began to lighten.
