Chapter 10 - The Home by the Lake

One year later.
The small white chapel on the cliffside overlooking the ocean in Kennebunkport, Maine, was filled with flowers, warm sunlight, and sixty close friends and family members.
Outside, the Atlantic waves crashed rhythmically against the golden rocks.
Inside, the organ played a soft, beautiful melody as eight-year-old Wren walked down the aisle as the maid of honor. She wore a delicate white lace dress, a flower crown of wild daisies in her dark hair, and carried a small basket of pink rose petals. Mounted proudly on the strap of her dress was her father’s silver Navy Cross.
Behind her came Maren, wearing an exquisite, simple silk gown that swept softly against the floor, looking radiant, breathtaking, and filled with a peace that lit up the entire chapel.
Standing at the altar waiting for her was Luca. He wore a crisp white naval dress uniform, his posture erect, his dark hair neatly styled, his grey eyes shining with pure, unadulterated devotion as he watched his wife walk toward him.
Beside the front pew sat a small framed photograph of Victoria DeLuca, who had passed away peacefully four months prior, surrounded by her family, having finally known the grace of unconditional love.
Luca took Maren’s hand as she reached the altar, bending down to whisper softly, "You are so beautiful."
"You don't look too bad yourself, Captain," Maren teased softly, her eyes shining with happy tears.
The minister smiled, opening his book. "We are gathered here today to unite Luca and Maren in holy matrimony..."
Twenty minutes later, after exchanging vows written from the heart, the minister smiled warmly. "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Luca, you may kiss your bride."
Luca pulled Maren into his arms, dipping her gently as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, loving kiss that drew loud cheers and applause from everyone in the chapel.
Wren stood right beside them, jumping up and down with a huge smile, clapping her small hands happily.
As they walked out of the chapel together into the bright, warm Maine sunshine, hand in hand as a complete, unbroken family, Wren reached up and grabbed Luca’s hand on one side and Maren’s hand on the other.
"Dad?" Wren asked, looking up at him as they walked down the wooden steps toward the ocean.
Luca looked down at his daughter, his heart fuller than he had ever dreamed possible. "Yes, sweetie?"
"Are we going to stay here forever?"
Luca stopped, knelt down on the grass, and pulled both Wren and Maren into a tight, warm family embrace, looking out at the endless golden sea.

"We're home, Wren," Luca whispered, kissing his daughter's cheek, then pressing his forehead against Maren's. "We're never leaving again."
And under the bright blue sky of Maine, the little girl who had once wept in a small apartment because she thought she had no father stood surrounded by the endless, unshakeable love of the parents who would protect her for the rest of their lives.
