Chapter 4 - The Interruption

The silence in the office was razor-sharp.

Mercer took a slow, deliberate step away from the desk, his hand reaching into his pocket—the pocket where the burner phone had been.

"Detective," Mercer said softly, his voice dropping an octave. "Did you bring backup with you this morning?"

Ruiz frowned, her instincts instantly flaring. "My partner is downstairs securing the front perimeter. Why?"

"Because," Mercer said, turning his body toward the window, "I think we have an intruder."

He lunged toward the heavy drapes, reaching out to rip them open.

BANG!

The heavy wooden door of Mercer’s office burst open so violently it slammed against the drywall.

Superintendent Richard Vance stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his face pale, holding an iPad in his trembling hands.

"David!" Vance shouted, ignoring Detective Ruiz completely. "Stop! Don't say another word!"

Mercer froze, his hand inches from the curtain edge. "Richard? What are you doing here?"

"The school board just received an anonymous broadcast email!" Vance stammered, his eyes wide with absolute panic. "It went to every board member, the chief of police, and the local news station ten minutes ago!"

Detective Ruiz stepped between Vance and Mercer. "What email?"

Vance handed the iPad to Ruiz. "It’s a video. A video recorded from inside this office an hour ago. It shows David shredding financial documents and talking about paying off our IT contractor to erase security footage!"

Ruiz stared at the screen, watching the crisp HD video Harper had recorded through the vent slats just sixty minutes earlier. The audio was unmistakable: Mercer threatening Harper, admitting to destroying security logs, and mentioning the athletic fund kickbacks.

Ruiz’s face turned to stone. She looked up at Mercer.

"David Mercer," Ruiz said, pulling her handcuffs from her belt with a sharp, metallic click. "Place your hands on your head and turn around."

"This is a setup!" Mercer screamed, backing away toward the window, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "That video is fake! It’s AI-generated! It was made by that crazy teacher, Harper Hadley!"

"Turn around, David!" Ruiz commanded, drawing her sidearm and pointing it at his chest. "Now!"

Mercer realized he was trapped. The smooth, polished administrator collapsed completely into a cornered animal. He looked at the door, then at Ruiz’s gun, and finally fell to his knees, sobbing hysterically as Ruiz forced his arms behind his back and snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists.

As Ruiz read Mercer his Miranda rights, Rachel slowly stepped out from behind the velvet drapes, holding her phone.

Superintendent Vance gasped. "Rachel?"

"I sent the email, Mr. Vance," Rachel said, her voice clear, strong, and completely devoid of fear. "And I sent the police the backup copy of your brother's fraudulent invoices, too."

Vance slumped against the doorframe, his knees giving out as two uniformed police officers rushed into the room, responding to Ruiz’s emergency radio call.

Harper stepped out from behind the drapes, breathless but standing tall.

Detective Ruiz looked at Harper, then at Rachel, a faint, rare smile breaking across her tired face.

"Ms. Hadley," Ruiz said, handing Mercer over to the uniformed officers. "You are officially the most inconvenient witness I have ever encountered in twenty years on the force."

May you like

"I take that as a compliment, Detective," Harper said softly.

"You should," Ruiz replied. "Now, let's go get Noah Bennett out of that juvenile holding room."
