Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

Pete Miller turned his cold, dark eyes to Harper.

"You should have minded your own business, Ms. Hadley," Miller said quietly. "You were a good teacher. The kids liked you. But you had to play detective."

"You put a gun in a twelve-year-old boy's backpack, Pete," Harper said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward despite Officer Harris’s frantic warning gesture. "You tried to destroy a child's life to protect your illegal weapons trade."

"It was business!" Miller snapped, his composure slipping for a fraction of a second. "Mercer was a fool! He was stealing pennies while I was building a network! That gun was supposed to be found in the park after school! Mercer panicked and dropped it in the hallway! I had to improvise!"

"And now?" Harper asked, taking another step. She was fifteen feet away now. "What is your plan now, Pete? You're surrounded. The police are outside. There are ten patrol cars in the parking lot right now."

Outside, the faint, rising wail of dozens of police sirens began to echo through the thick concrete walls.

Miller’s head snapped toward the staircase. For a split second, his attention wavered.

"Now, Officer!" Harper screamed.

Noah—using every ounce of strength in his small body—lifted his foot and kicked Miller hard in the back of his knee.

Miller stumbled forward, dropping his tactical light.

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the narrow concrete hallway, deafeningly loud.

Officer Harris fired twice.

Pete Miller collapsed onto the damp concrete floor, his handgun skittering away into the darkness, landing right at Harper’s feet.

Harper didn't look at the gun. She rushed past Miller’s prone body, falling to her knees beside Rachel and Noah, pulling the tape from Noah’s mouth and wrapping her arms around both of them.

"Noah! Rachel! Are you hurt?!" Harper sobbed, her tears flowing freely now.

"We're okay! We're okay!" Rachel cried, pressing her forehead against Noah's as Officer Harris rushed forward to secure Miller and check his pulse.

"He's alive," Officer Harris called out, pulling out his radio. "Suspect is down and secured! Need paramedics in the basement level immediately!"

Heavy footsteps thundered down the concrete stairs as Detective Ruiz and a dozen tactical officers flooded the hallway, their flashlights illuminating the dark space in brilliant, white light.

Ruiz rushed to Harper, helping her stand up gently.

"Are you all right, Harper?" Ruiz asked, her eyes searching Harper’s face. "The baby?"

Harper rested her hand over her stomach. She felt a strong, firm kick from within—a declaration of survival.

"She’s strong, Detective," Harper said, a radiant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "She’s very strong."

Noah reached out, taking Harper’s hand, holding it tight.

"Thank you, Ms. Hadley," Noah whispered.

Harper looked down at the dark-haired boy who had endured so much, and pulled him into a warm, gentle hug. "You don't ever have to thank me, Noah. You're safe now. You're both safe."
