Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The following morning, the sunlight filtering through the nursery blinds offered no warmth, only a stark illumination of the chaos that had transpired. Clara sat propped up against the pillows of their master bed, a cold compress pressed gently against her temple. Marcus sat on the edge of the mattress, his phone clutched so tightly in his hand that his knuckles turned chalk-white.
He had spent the entire night pacing the perimeter of the house, checking every lock, his mind racing through a labyrinth of memories he had long tried to bury. Growing up under Eleanor’s thumb meant living in a world of perfectionism and cruelty disguised as high standards. But he had always believed her toxicity was confined to psychological manipulation—verbal barbs, icy disapprovals, and emotional withholding. He had never imagined she was capable of physical brutality, let alone directing it toward an innocent infant and an exhausted mother.
"We need to talk about what happens next," Clara said quietly, breaking the heavy silence. She lowered the compress, her gaze steady, though exhaustion lingered in the hollows of her eyes.
Marcus looked up, his jaw tightening. "We’re cutting her off completely. No calls, no visits, no access to us or Lily. If she tries to step foot on this property again, I’m calling the police and filing a restraining order."
"It won't be that simple, Marcus," Clara sighed, shifting slightly with a grimace. "You know how your mother operates. She controls the family trust, she has deep ties in the community, and she views everything as a transaction. By defying her, you’ve declared war on her entire ecosystem."
"Let her declare war," Marcus growled, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees. "I have a job. I can support my family. We don't need her money, and we certainly don't need her toxic presence dictating how we live our lives."
Before Clara could reply, a sharp, insistent buzzing fractured the quiet of the morning. It was Marcus’s phone. He glanced down at the screen, and his expression instantly darkened into a scowl.
It was a text message from his mother: “You think you can cast me aside like a piece of garbage over a hysterical girl and a screaming brat? You are nothing without this family, Marcus. You will come to me and beg for forgiveness by sundown, or you will find out very quickly what it means to be truly ruined.”
Marcus stared at the glowing screen, a cold fury rising in his chest once more. He didn't hesitate. With deliberate, measured movements, he tapped the screen, blocked Eleanor’s number entirely, and tossed the phone onto the nightstand as if it were a venomous snake.

"What was it?" Clara asked softly, reading the tension in his rigid shoulders.
"Nothing," Marcus said, leaning over to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "Just an empty threat from a woman who has finally lost all control. From here on out, it’s just the three of us. I promise you, Clara, we are going to build a fortress around this family that nothing can penetrate."
