Chapter 5 - The Counter-Offensive

Armed with the documents his grandfather had left behind, Marcus transformed from a defensive husband into a calculated strategist. He spent the next forty-eight hours consulting with a brilliant independent corporate litigator—a fierce, no-nonsense attorney named Sarah Vance (no relation), who specialized in corporate dismantling and trust reclamation.

"Your mother’s legal team has been relying on intimidation and the assumption that you wouldn't fight back," Sarah explained across her glass desk on Friday morning, flipping through the faded ledgers. "But these documents give us absolute leverage. The Vanguard Foundation board has been operating under fraudulent asset declarations for years to protect her personal slush fund. If we file an injunction, the courts will freeze her primary accounts within forty-eight hours."

"Do it," Marcus said without a moment's hesitation. "I want a full audit, and I want an emergency injunction filed against her personal holdings."

"Keep in mind, Marcus, once we pull this trigger, there’s no turning back," Sarah warned, looking him squarely in the eye. "She will retaliate with everything she has left. It’s going to get very ugly before it gets better."

"She already tried to hurt my wife and my newborn daughter," Marcus replied, his voice chillingly calm. "She crossed a line that can never be uncrossed. Let her throw everything she has. We're ready."

By Monday afternoon, the legal lightning bolt struck.

Eleanor Vance was sitting in her opulent drawing room, sipping imported Earl Grey tea and reviewing social gala invitations, when her private legal counsel burst through the doors without knocking. The usually composed lawyer looked as though he had seen a ghost, his face drained of all color.

"Madam Vance," the lawyer gasped, clutching a stack of freshly printed court documents. "We have an emergency. The federal court just issued a total freeze on the foundation’s primary assets, coupled with an injunction on your personal accounts."

Eleanor’s teacup shattered against the marble floor, the dark liquid spilling like blood across the pristine surface. "An injunction? On my accounts? By whose authority?!"

"It was filed under an amended trust addendum," the lawyer stammered, adjusting his glasses with shaking hands. "Executed by the late senior patriarch... and initiated by your son, Marcus."

For the first time in her life, Eleanor felt the cold, paralyzing grip of true panic. Her face contorted into a mask of pure fury as she realized her son hadn't just deflected her blow—he had seized the sword and aimed it straight at her throat.
