Chapter 5 - Shadows on the Perimeter

Three weeks passed.
The dynamic inside the Hale estate shifted in ways that left my lieutenants bewildered.
The cold, silent halls that had once echoed only with the heavy boots of armed guards were now punctuated by the sound of a four-year-old’s laughter. Toys—wooden trains, coloring books, and plush animals—began to appear in the grand drawing room.
I found myself returning to the estate early every evening, cutting short high-stakes negotiations in Manhattan just to sit on the terrace and watch Sofia paint messy watercolors while Maria sat nearby, quietly reading.
For the first time in my life, my estate didn't feel like a fortress or a prison. It felt like a home.
Then, on a dark Thursday evening, the storm returned.
I was sitting in my study reviewing shipping manifests when Arthur walked in without knocking. His expression was grimmer than I had ever seen it.
"Boss," Arthur said, shutting the heavy door. "We have a breach on the outer perimeter."
I set my pen down instantly. "Details."
"A black sedan was spotted parked two hundred yards down the county road," Arthur reported. "Our heat-mapping cameras picked up three men equipped with night-vision gear cutting through the woods near the West Gate. We intercepted them before they hit the inner fence."
"Are they alive?"
"Two are," Arthur said darkly. "The third tried to draw a suppressed weapon. He's in the basement holding room."
I stood up, pulling a silver signet ring onto my finger. "Who sent them?"
"We pulled a satellite phone from the leader's jacket," Arthur said. "The last outgoing call was to a private residence in Lake Forest, Illinois. Leo Moretti."

A cold, dark tide rose in my chest—not of fear, but of a terrifying, absolute fury. Leo Moretti had dared to send hitmen onto my land, targeting a mother and child under my personal protection.
"Bring the survivor up to the garage," I commanded, my voice flat as ice. "And tell Maria to keep Sofia upstairs in the master wing."
