Chapter 9 - A Fortress of Grace

Six months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the gardens of my New York estate, casting long, peaceful shadows across the green grass.
The heavy iron gates that had once served as a prison now felt like the walls of a sanctuary. The estate was quiet, but it was no longer cold.
In the center of the lawn, five-year-old Sofia was running in circles, wearing a bright red sun hat, chasing a fluffy white golden retriever puppy I had bought her for her birthday. Her clear, joyful laughter echoed across the grounds, reaching the shaded terrace where I sat.
I sat at the wrought-iron table, a cup of fresh coffee in my hand.
Beside me sat Maria. She wore a simple white linen dress, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. She looked younger, lighter, the lines of worry and terror that had once etched her face completely smoothed away by peace.
On her finger sparkled a single, flawless diamond ring—a promise of protection, devotion, and an unbroken future.
"What are you looking at?" Maria asked softly, smiling as she caught me staring at her.
"I'm looking at my life," I said, taking her hand into mine, bringing her knuckles to my lips.

She leaned over, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to my cheek. "You saved us, Daniel."
"No," I replied, looking out at Sofia as she tumbled into the grass with her puppy, letting out a delighted squeal. "You saved me."
