Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and Rebirth

Three months after the trial, the financial world had completely realigned itself around a new titan.
Prescott Global was officially dissolved, its toxic assets liquidated, and its valuable core infrastructure fully integrated into a newly formed global conglomerate: Sterling Innovation Dynamics.
On a sunny Tuesday morning, the grand opening of the new Sterling Tower took place on Wall Street.
I stood on the glass balcony of the top floor, looking out over the city. I wore a brilliant crimson dress, my dark hair styled in soft waves, a delicate diamond necklace—a gift from my father—glistening around my neck.
Clara walked out onto the balcony, holding a silver tray with a cup of fresh espresso.
"The initial public offering for Sterling Dynamics opened ten minutes ago, Alyssa," Clara reported, her face beaming with genuine joy. "Market capitalization has already cleared fifty billion dollars. We are officially the most successful tech listing of the decade."
"Thank you, Clara," I smiled, taking the espresso. "And the former Prescott board members?"
"Arthur Pendelton’s firm went into liquidation last week," Clara said, reading from her tablet. "As for Aaron's mother, Evelyn, she was forced to sell her remaining jewelry to pay off her personal debts. She is currently living in a small studio apartment in Queens, working as a receptionist for a dental clinic."
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling no malice, no regret, and no anger. It was simply the natural rebalancing of a world where people were finally forced to pay for their own choices.
"And Aaron?" I asked quietly.
"He was transferred to the federal correctional facility in upstate New York yesterday," Clara answered. "His appeals were summarily rejected by the circuit court. He has been assigned to work in the prison laundry department."
I looked out over the skyline, watching the morning clouds drift over the skyscrapers.
Four years of my life had been spent trying to shrink myself to fit into a small man's ego. I had hidden my wealth, muted my intellect, and allowed myself to be pushed into the background because I had mistaken a leech's appetite for a husband's love.
Never again.
The glass door behind me opened, and my father stepped out onto the balcony, wearing his signature sharp suit, a proud smile warming his usually stoic face.
"A penny for your thoughts, CEO Sterling?" Edward asked, coming to stand beside me.
"I was just thinking," I said, looking out at the endless horizon, "how beautiful the air is when you're finally breathing at the right altitude."

My father laughed, touching his glass to mine. "To the future, my dear."
"To the future," I replied.
