Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The drive to Philadelphia was deafening, the windshield wipers of Noah’s Jeep fighting a losing battle against the sheet of rain. Elena sat in the passenger seat, staring out into the blackness of the highway, her mind a chaotic storm of its own.
Noah kept his eyes on the road, but his jaw was tight. "You’re not telling me something, Elena. You've been quiet for nine years, but tonight you look like you’ve been hit by a freight train. What happened in my dad’s study before I got there?"
Elena looked at her bandaged hand. The pain was a dull throb now, but the star-shaped mark beneath it felt like a brand. She trusted Noah more than anyone in that house, but how could she tell him that she might be his half-sister? How could she shatter his perception of his family?
"Your father... he recognized a birthmark on my hand," Elena said carefully, choosing her words like a path through a minefield. "He knew my mother, Noah. Before he married your mother. Her name was Lily."
Noah swerved slightly, his tires splashing through a deep puddle before he corrected the steering wheel. He pulled the Jeep into the parking lot of a 24-hour diner just off the highway, killing the engine. He turned in his seat to face her, the neon sign of the diner casting a surreal pink glow over his sharp features.
"Lily Vance," Noah said, his voice entirely devoid of shock. It was a statement of realization.
Elena gasped. "You know that name?"
Noah reached into the backseat, grabbing his leather backpack. He unzipped it and pulled out a thick, charcoal-smudged sketchbook. He flipped through pages of abstract landscapes and anatomy studies until he reached the very back. He handed the book to Elena.
On the page was a beautifully rendered charcoal sketch of the same woman from Grant’s safe. The woman in the sunflowers. The woman who looked exactly like Elena.
"I found an old canvas hidden behind the insulation in the attic three years ago," Noah explained, his voice quiet. "It was signed 'L.V.' Dad had built a false wall up there to hide her paintings. I’ve been sketching her face from memory ever since, trying to figure out why Dad looks at the attic door like it’s a graveyard. When you first came to work for us, Elena, you were only twenty. I was thirteen. I didn't see it then. But over the years, as you grew up... you became her."
Elena let out a ragged sob, covering her face with her hands. "He thinks I’m his daughter, Noah. He thinks Lily was pregnant when she ran away."
Noah was silent for a long, agonizing moment. Then, he reached across the console and pulled her into a fierce, protective hug. Elena wept openly into his shoulder, the isolation of her entire childhood crashing down upon her. All those years at St. Agnes, wondering why she had been abandoned, why no one had ever come for her.
"If it’s true," Noah whispered into her hair, "it means you’re my sister. And it means my mother has known it the entire time."
"What do you mean?" Elena asked, pulling back, wiping her eyes.
"Think about it," Noah said, his eyes darkening with a sudden, sharp clarity. "Why did Mom suddenly start targeting you three months ago? What changed?"
Elena thought back, trying to pinpoint the exact moment Catherine’s behavior had shifted from cold indifference to active malice. "The... the charity gala. The one for the historical society. Grant asked me to bring some old ledgers down from the archives in the basement. He was looking for the original property deeds from the nineties."
May you like
"Exactly," Noah said. "Mom must have seen you handling those files. Or maybe she found out Dad was looking into the past again. She realized that having you in the house was a ticking time bomb. She couldn't fire you without Dad asking questions, so she tried to make you look like a thief to force you to resign. She wanted you gone before Dad ever saw that mark on your hand."
Noah grabbed her shoulders. "You can't go to Mill Creek, Elena. You can't run away. If you run, my mother wins, and you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering who you are. We’re going to my apartment in the city. Tomorrow, we find out the truth."
