Chapter 8 - The Falling of the Veil

The silence that followed Elena’s declaration was absolute. The two corporate lawyers looked at each other, closed their legal pads simultaneously, and stood up.
"Mrs. Whitmore, Mr. Whitmore," the lead lawyer said, his tone entirely neutral. "Under the current circumstances, we must advise the board to suspend any action regarding the leadership of the company until a full internal investigation into these allegations can be conducted. Good day."
They left the room quickly, their footsteps echoing down the marble hallway like a death knell for Catherine’s grand plan.
Catherine collapsed back onto the sofa, her face looking suddenly haggard, the preservation of her wealth failing her completely. She looked at Mason, but her oldest son wouldn't meet her eyes. Mason was a businessman; he knew when a position was entirely untenable.
"Mason..." Catherine whispered, her voice cracked. "Say something."
"I can't, Mom," Mason said quietly, his voice tight. "If what Elena says is true... if you did those things to Lily Vance... you didn't just ruin Dad’s life. You put the entire company at risk for a thirty-year vendetta. I’m going back to the corporate office. We need to prepare for damage control."
Mason walked out of the study, leaving Catherine completely alone on the velvet sofa.
Grant walked around his desk, completely ignoring his wife. He stood before Elena, his eyes full of tears. He reached out, his hand gently covering her bandaged left palm, where the star-shaped birthmark lay hidden.
"I am so sorry, Elena," Grant choked out, his voice cracking with thirty years of repressed agony. "I let her drive you away before I could see you. I let her treat you like a servant in my own house. I was blind. I was a coward."
"You didn't know, Dad," Elena said, the word Dad feeling strange but beautiful on her tongue. "But you know now. And we’re going to fix it."
Noah walked over, placing a hand on Elena’s shoulder, a bright, genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in months. "Come on. Let’s get your things out of that staff apartment. You’re never sleeping above a garage again."

As they turned to leave the study, Grant looked back at Catherine, who was staring blankly at the empty safe.
"The lawyers will contact you tomorrow, Catherine," Grant said, his voice cold and final. "You will pack your things and leave this estate by midnight. If you take so much as a silver spoon that doesn't belong to you, I will personally hand Elena’s diary to the district attorney. Your reign in this house is over."
