Chapter 6 - The Steel Shield

Meanwhile, at the Vale Estate on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, life moved in stark contrast to the chaos enveloping the Bennetts.
The estate was a sprawling stone fortress surrounded by fifty acres of private forest, high security walls, and state-of-the-art surveillance. Inside, however, the grand house felt warmer than it had in decades.
In the sunlit nursery on the second floor, Emma sat in a rocking chair, feeding two-month-old Grace a bottle. Grace had grown significantly—her dark eyes were bright, her cheeks chubby, and her small hands reached happily for the silver locket Emma wore around her neck.
Dominic stood near the door frame, watching them in silence.
He had removed his suit jacket, his dark shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the subtle scars of a past life.
"She’s getting bigger," Dominic said softly, stepping into the room.
Emma looked up, a genuine, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "The pediatrician said she’s in the ninetieth percentile for growth. She’s strong, Dominic."
"Like her mother," Dominic murmured, walking over to stand beside the rocking chair.
He gently reached down one large, calloused finger. Grace immediately let go of the bottle, her tiny hand wrapping tightly around Dominic’s finger, pulling it toward her mouth with an enthusiastic babble.
Dominic let out a quiet, rare laugh—a sound so warm and genuine that Emma felt a flutter in her chest.
Over the past two months, the feared crime boss had transformed into an unshakable pillar of protection. He never pressed Emma, never demanded gratitude, and treated Grace with a gentle reverence that made Emma’s heart ache with affection.
"Victoria called this morning," Emma said softly, looking up into his eyes. "The judge granted us temporary full custody and issued a permanent restraining order against Blake and Harrison."
"It’s a good step," Dominic said, though his eyes remained watchful. "But Harrison isn't going to surrender quietly. He’s backed into a corner."
"Are we safe here, Dominic?" Emma asked, a flicker of anxiety touching her voice.
Dominic looked down at the child holding his finger, then looked into Emma’s eyes with a look of absolute, divine certainty.
"Nothing on this earth will ever hurt you or Grace while I draw breath, Emma," Dominic promised softly. "I give you my word."
Before Emma could answer, Caleb Shaw stepped rapidly into the nursery, his face pale and serious.
"Dominic," Caleb barked quietly. "We have a situation. Perimeter alarm just tripped at the north gate. Satellite intercept picked up Rostov’s frequencies. It’s an execution squad."
Emma gasped, pulling Grace tight against her chest.
Dominic didn't flinch. He slowly straightened up, his dark eyes instantly transforming into cold, terrifying obsidian. The gentle protector vanished, replaced by the lethal commander who ruled South Chicago.
"Get Emma and Grace to the safe room below the wine cellar," Dominic ordered calmly. "Activate the lockdown protocol. Nobody leaves this house."
"Dominic... please be careful," Emma cried out, her hand clutching his arm.

Dominic looked down at her hand on his sleeve, then reached up, gently touching her cheek with his thumb.
"I’ll be back for dinner, sweetheart," Dominic whispered. "Hide."
