Chapter 5 - Unearthing Valerie

I woke up to the smell of smoke and the sharp, coppery taste of blood in my mouth.
The car was resting at a tilt against a massive oak tree. The passenger side was crushed inward, but the structural frame had held. I blinked through the pain, a searing ache throbbing in my temple.
"Carol!" I gasped, turning my head.
Carol was slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious but breathing, a deep gash bleeding heavily near her hairline. I reached across the console, checking her pulse—it was thready but steady.
A shadow fell over the shattered passenger window.
I looked up. Valerie stood there, holding a small, silver handgun pointed directly at my face. Her clothes were disheveled, her expensive coat stained with dirt. She looked completely unhinged, a far cry from the polished professional I had seen in photos.
"Where is it?" she hissed, her voice trembling with rage. "Where is the ledger? Where are the encryption keys?"
"Valerie, listen to me," I pleaded, raising my hands slowly, trying to shield Carol with my body. "Michael lied to you. He lied about everything."
"Shut up!" she screamed, tapping the barrel against the fractured glass. "He told me you would try this! He said you were a master manipulator, just like your father! You stole my family's legacy! You lived in luxury while my mother died in a state asylum!"
"My father was George Henderson! He taught high school in Toledo, Ohio!" I shouted back, my voice cracking with desperation. "Look in my purse! Look at my birth certificate, my old family photos! Michael used you! He wanted your access to the brokerage firm to steal his own son's trust fund!"
Valerie hesitated, the gun wavering slightly. The sheer conviction in my voice seemed to hit her like a physical blow.
"No," she whispered, shaking her head violently. "No, Michael loves me. We are going to Montenegro. He’s waiting for me at the safe house in the city... he went ahead to clear the customs blockade..."
"If he loved you, why are you still here doing his dirty work while he’s across the ocean?" I pressed, realizing this was my only chance. "He left you behind to clean up the mess. He knew his mother would find out about the fraud. He knew the police would come. He made you the scapegoat, Valerie! If you kill us, you take the fall for murder while he enjoys the millions alone!"
Valerie's face went completely pale. The hand holding the gun dropped an inch. "He... he said he needed me to retrieve the physical ledger from the safe because it contained the offline routing numbers... he said he couldn't access the final accounts without it."
"He used your hatred to blind you," I said softly, stepping carefully out of the ruined driver's side door, keeping my hands visible. "Let me show you the letter we found in the safe. The letter you wrote him. He left it there on purpose, Valerie. He left it so the police would find it and know exactly who helped him steal the money. He framed you."
Valerie stared at me as I pulled the unsealed envelope from my jacket pocket and held it out to her. She snatched it, her eyes racing over her own handwriting, then landing on the bottom of the page where a second note had been scrawled in Michael's distinctive, blocky print: File this under 'Evidence of Valerie's Extortion' in the digital backup.

Valerie dropped the gun. It fell into the damp leaves at her feet. She sank to her knees, a terrible, broken sob tearing out of her chest.
"He left me," she whispered, her hands covering her face. "He took everything, and he left me to go to prison."
