Chapter 8 - The Legal Warfare

The months that followed were a grueling, exhausting storm of legal proceedings, deposition hearings, and media scrutiny. The story of the "Suburban Cage Husband" captured the national headlines, but Carol and I stood like a fortress against the onslaught.
With Valerie Lattimore testifying as the state's star witness in exchange for a reduced sentence, the prosecution's case against Michael was ironclad. The forged documents, the smart-home logs, the offshore banking records, and the terrifying checklist found in his office were presented before a federal grand jury.
Michael's high-priced defense team tried desperately to play the angle of temporary insanity brought on by financial stress, but the sheer level of calculation evidenced by his multi-month plot shattered any hope of leniency.
I sat in the front row of the federal courtroom every single day, holding Carol's hand. We watched as the judge systematically denied Michael bail, designating him a high-flight risk. The joint assets were frozen, and through Carol's immense legal resources, a federal forensic accounting team managed to claw back over ninety percent of the liquidated trust fund from the offshore accounts before it could vanish into bearer bonds.
During my own testimony, Michael’s lawyer tried to cross-examine me about my mental stability, bringing up the fake medical reports Michael had commissioned.
I stood at the podium, looked directly at the jury, and presented the clean bill of health issued by the independent hospital evaluation conducted the day after my rescue.
"My husband didn't lock me away because I was sick," I stated clearly, my voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "He locked me away because I was the only person who looked past his perfect porch and saw the monster hiding inside."

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.
Michael was found guilty on all counts: federal wire fraud, grand larceny, attempted custodial interference, and felony child endangerment.
