Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Light

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Westlake Village, painting the surrounding hills in vivid shades of green and gold. The Brooks estate had undergone a subtle transformation: the dark, oppressive heavy curtains had been replaced with light linen, and the grand house was filled with the sounds of music and laughter.
It was the morning of Emma’s eighth birthday.
The long oak dining table—once a place of cold discipline and fear—was draped in a bright pastel tablecloth, covered with flowers, presents, and a large three-tiered strawberry cake prepared by Mrs. Clara.
Around the table sat those who had fought to protect her: David Parker, Marcus Vance, Mrs. Clara, and several young children from Emma’s new elementary school, whose laughter bounced off the high ceilings.
Emma stood at the head of the table—the exact spot where Laura Bennett had once sat in her cold silk blouse.
She wore a bright white birthday dress, the silver charm bracelet gleaming on her wrist in the warm California sunlight pouring through the tall windows.
David stood near the doorway, watching her with a deep, quiet pride. Over the past year, the thin, timid child who tore dry bread into tiny crumbs had grown into a bright, confident girl who played piano every afternoon and ran through the garden without looking over her shoulder.
Emma picked up the silver cake server, looked at her friends, and then walked over to David, holding out a large, generous piece of cake on a porcelain plate.
“The first piece is for you, David,” she said, looking up at him with clear, bright blue eyes.
David took the plate, kneeling down to her eye level.
“Thank you, Emma,” David said, his voice thick with emotion. “How does it feel to turn eight?”
Emma looked around the bright room, taking in the flowers, the music, the smiling faces, and the framed photograph of her mother sitting prominently on the piano in the corner.

“It feels like my house is full,” she said softly, giving him a warm, tight hug.
The grand front doors stood wide open to the warm spring breeze. The long legal battles were over, the estate was secure in trust, and the shadows that had once filled the hallways were completely gone—replaced forever by light, warmth, and the promise of a peaceful future.
