Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Gates

The morning light over Westlake Village usually brought a soft, golden calm, but three months after the court’s final ruling, David Parker found himself sitting in his study with a heavy cup of black coffee that had long gone cold.

On the mahogany desk lay a thin, yellow envelope marked with the emblem of the California Department of Corrections.

Laura Bennett’s trial for financial fraud and child endangerment had been set for the following spring, but her high-priced legal defense team—funded by a trust fund her late father had established years ago—had begun filing a barrage of technical appeals. Worse still, a remote relative from her side of the family had recently filed a petition seeking "supervised visitation rights" for eight-year-old Olivia, claiming that cutting all ties between the stepsisters would cause severe psychological damage to both children.

David rubbed his temples. He knew the legal reality: it was a tactical wedge. If Laura’s family could secure visitation, they could regain a foothold near the Brooks estate and attempt to challenge the dynamic of the trust’s guardianship.

A soft knock at the open study door broke his concentration.

Emma stood in the frame, wearing a bright yellow sundress and holding a small watercolor pad. Her hair was neatly braided, and the silver charm bracelet on her wrist clicked softly against the doorframe.

“David?” she asked, her voice clear and untroubled. “Mrs. Clara said we need to pick out the roses for the front walkway today. The red ones or the white ones?”

David immediately slid the prison letter under a legal pad and offered her a warm smile.

“Let’s go with the white ones, Emma. Just like the ones your mother planted by the patio.”

Emma beamed, turning back toward the kitchen, her light footsteps echoing down the hardwood hallway.

David watched her go, his expression hardening as he reached for his phone and dialed Marcus Vance.

“Marcus,” David said the moment the call connected. “Laura’s team is pushing for a visitation motion using Olivia as the leverage. I want a full background check on this third cousin who signed the petition—Arthur’s old firm used similar third-party proxies to gain standing in probate cases.”

“I’m already on it, David,” Marcus replied from his office in downtown LA. “And there’s something else. Yesterday afternoon, a private investigator hired by Laura’s defense was spotted taking photographs outside the gates of the Westlake property.”

David stood up, walking over to the window that looked out toward the front security gates. A dark sedan was parked near the bend in the road, barely visible behind the tall oak trees.

“Enhance the security patrol around the perimeter,” David ordered quietly. “They think they can wear us down with paperwork and psychological pressure. They’re about to find out that every wall around this child is made of solid steel.”
