Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Broken

The war with the Moretti family didn't end with a bloody shootout in the streets, but rather with a swift, merciless financial execution.

Within forty-eight hours of freezing the offshore accounts, Dominic released the evidence of Moretti’s illegal narcotics smuggling to federal prosecutors, alongside years of laundered bank wire records provided by Sofia's ledgers. Facing federal indictments, asset seizures, and total financial ruin, Valentin Moretti surrendered without firing a single shot. He signed over his syndicate’s commercial real estate holdings in Manhattan to settle his debt to the Castellanos before fleeing the country to South America.

Gerald Whitfield was turned over to federal authorities, facing charges of attempted murder, grand larceny, and corporate espionage that guaranteed he would spend the rest of his natural life behind bars.

A week later, the storm had finally passed, leaving the Hudson estate bathed in bright, crisp early morning sunlight.

In the main mansion, the grand dining room—a room that had remained dark and unused for sixteen years—was lit with warm morning sun pouring through the tall stained-glass windows.

Sofia sat at the end of the long mahogany table, dressed in a comfortable cream sweater and jeans, looking healthy, vibrant, and completely recovered. Beside her, Mia was happily pouring syrup over a massive stack of blueberry pancakes prepared by the estate's new executive chef.

Dominic sat at the head of the table, dressed in a simple black turtleneck sweater, reading the morning financial paper while sipping his coffee.

Sofia looked around the massive, sunlit room, still feeling entirely out of place.

"Mr. Castellano," Sofia said softly, setting her fork down. "Dr. Thorne discharged me fully yesterday. The doctor said I'm fit to return to work. I can start cleaning the West Wing afternoon floors today—"

Dominic lowered his newspaper, looking over the rim at her. "You are not cleaning floors anymore, Sofia."

Sofia paused, her heart skipping a beat. "Sir? Am I... am I being reassigned?"

"You're being promoted," Dominic stated calmly, setting his coffee cup down on the saucer with a soft clink. "As of this morning, you are the chief administrator of the Castellano Estate & Charitable Foundation. You will oversee all estate payroll, staff welfare, property renovations, and community grants."

Sofia stared at him, completely speechless, her mouth slightly open. "Admin... administrator? Mr. Castellano, I don't have a corporate degree. I was just a maid—"

"You uncovered a nine-year embezzlement scheme that my highly paid auditors missed for a decade," Dominic interrupted smoothly. "You have incredible attention to detail, absolute integrity, and a protective instinct that saved this estate millions. I don't care about a piece of paper from a university. I care about competence and loyalty."

He reached into his pocket and placed a set of keys and an official folder on the table in front of her.

"Furthermore," Dominic added, "the carriage house is being demolished next month to build a new guest garden. You and Mia are moving into the East Wing master suite upstairs."

Sofia gasped, tears immediately welling in her dark eyes. "The master suite? Dominic... no, that's too much. We can't accept that—"

"Mama, look!" Mia interrupted, holding up her fork with a piece of pancake. "Mr. Knight made the syrup look like a smiley face!"

Dominic looked down at Mia, a soft, genuine smile softening his sharp features. "It was the chef, Mia, but I helped with the design."

Sofia looked between her daughter and the powerful, intimidating boss who had completely transformed their lives in less than two weeks. The terrifying mob boss the world feared was sitting in his dining room, watching a four-year-old girl eat pancakes with a look of quiet, protective devotion in his eyes.

"Why are you doing all of this, Dominic?" Sofia asked again, her voice quivering with emotion. "You gave us a home, a career, safety... things people like us could only dream of."

Dominic stayed quiet for a long moment. He looked around the vast, forty-two-room mansion that had been cold and empty for his entire adult life.

"For sixteen years," Dominic said softly, his dark eyes meeting hers, "I thought this house was just a fortress to keep the world out. But you and your daughter showed me that a fortress is worthless if there’s no life inside it. You gave this house a soul, Sofia. The least I can do is give you a home."
