Chapter 5 - The Harbor Gala

The Port Aurelia Grand Ballroom was a palace of glass, gold leaf, and crimson velvet, overlooking the moonlit waters of the harbor.
Over five hundred of the city’s most powerful figures—corrupt senators, shipping magnates, syndicate bosses, and high-society socialites—milled about the room, sipping vintage champagne while a fifty-piece orchestra played a slow, dramatic waltz.
At the center of the room stood Don Carmine Maroni.
Carmine was fifty-five, bloated, with a greasy mustache and a suit that cost more than a house. He was surrounded by his enforcers, boasting loudly about his recent shipping victories, his laugh echoing over the music.
“Dante Valente is finished,” Carmine scoffed, taking a gulp of whiskey. “He’s hiding in his cliffside house, crying over a dead dog. He doesn't have the stomach for a real war—”
The grand double doors at the top of the ballroom’s marble staircase swung open.
The herald didn't announce the arrival. He didn't need to. The entire ballroom went dead silent in a fraction of a second.
Standing at the top of the stairs was Dante Valente. He wore a midnight-black tuxedo that made him look like an ancient prince of shadows. His dark hair was brushed back, his cold gray eyes sweeping over the crowd with absolute, terrifying supremacy.
But nobody was looking at Dante.
Everyone was looking at the woman on his arm.
Emily Parker had been completely transformed. She wore a floor-length emerald silk gown that hugged her slender waist before cascading down in rich, heavy folds. Her dark hair was pinned up in an elegant vintage undo, revealing the long, graceful line of her neck and a breathtaking three-carat emerald necklace that matched her eyes.
She didn't look like a poor vet tech from the slums. She looked like a queen stepping down from a throne.
Beside them, trotting calmly on a polished leather leash held in Dante’s left hand, was Brutus. The massive Cane Corso wore a custom leather harness covering his bandaged shoulder, his head held high, his dark eyes scanning the room with calm, terrifying pride.
“My God,” a senator whispered nearby. “Is that... Valente’s fiancée?”
“Who is she?” a high-society woman gasped, clutching her pearls. “She’s stunning!”
Emily felt the eyes of five hundred dangerous people burning into her skin. Her hand trembled slightly where it rested on Dante’s forearm.
Instantly, Dante covered her hand with his broad, warm palm, squeezing gently.
“Keep your chin up, little bird,” Dante murmured smoothly, his head bent close to hers as they began their slow descent down the marble staircase. “They are not looking at a victim. They are looking at the woman who conquered the King of Port Aurelia.”
A flush of warmth rushed through Emily’s cheeks, her fear melting away into a sudden surge of fierce, unyielding pride. She straightened her back, lifted her chin, and walked down those stairs as if she owned the floor beneath her feet.
At the bottom of the stairs, Carmine Maroni stood frozen, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple.
Dante walked directly toward him, the crowd parting like the Red Sea to make way for them. Brutus walked right alongside Dante, giving Carmine a low, quiet growl that made the older man take an involuntary step back.
“Carmine,” Dante greeted smoothly, his voice carrying clearly over the silent ballroom. “You look surprised to see me.”
Carmine swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure. He sneered, looking at Emily. “Valente. I see you brought a pet... and a stray girl.”
Before Carmine could finish his sentence, Dante’s hand moved.
He didn't pull a gun. He pulled a thick leather folder from his inner jacket pocket and tossed it onto the glass table beside Carmine’s drink.
“That is the federal seizure order for your docks, Carmine,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a lethal, icy whisper that chilled everyone within ten feet. “Effective five minutes ago, the Coast Guard seized all six of your supply ships. Your bank accounts in Switzerland have been frozen. And your lieutenants are currently being arrested in the lobby by federal agents.”
Carmine’s eyes went wide with pure terror. “What?! You... you can't do this!”
“I already did,” Dante smirked coldly. “You thought you were starting a war over a supply truck, Carmine. I just ended your bloodline’s presence in this city.”
Dante didn't wait for a response. He turned his back on the ruined Don, turning toward Emily with a look of profound, breathtaking tenderness.
He held out his hand to her.
“May I have this dance, Miss Parker?” Dante asked softly.
Emily looked at the ruined mob boss, then at the glittering ballroom, and finally into the gray eyes of the man who had turned the entire city upside down for her.
She smiled—a real, radiant smile that illuminated the entire room.

“I would love to, Don Dante,” she whispered, placing her hand in his.
As the orchestra struck up a sweeping waltz, Dante pulled Emily into his arms, spinning her across the floor before the eyes of the entire city, declaring to the world that she was untouchable.
