Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The east wing of the Vale mansion was a place that had not seen life in twenty years. It had belonged to Arthur Vale before his death, preserved like a museum of silence—heavy mahogany furniture, dusty oil paintings, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the frozen gardens.

By 2:00 a.m., the room was transformed. A crackling fire burned in the massive stone fireplace, casting a deep orange glow across the Persian rug. Clara sat on a velvet sofa, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket, her hair freshly washed and combed into wet dark waves by Elena, the estate's head housekeeper. Bear lay beside her, his belly finally full of roasted chicken, his head resting comfortably on her lap while she slowly petted his ears.

Across the room, sitting behind a heavy oak desk, Dominic had a high-powered military laptop open. Plugged into its side was the micro-SD card from Clara’s locket.

Standing near the desk was Lucian—Dominic’s second-in-command, a tall, lean man with graying temples, a sharp scar across his nose, and two decades of blood on his hands.

"Boss," Lucian whispered, leaning over the screen, his eyes scanning lines of decrypted code. "This isn't just Julian Vance’s old ledger. This is a complete record of every off-the-books transaction made by the city’s high council for the last fifteen years."

"Look at the sub-file marked 'Project Styx,'" Dominic said, his finger tapping the glass screen.

Lucian clicked the file. His breath hitched.

The screen opened into a series of archived wire transfers, police reports, and encrypted emails dating back twenty years. At the top of the file was an autopsy report for Arthur Vale. Attached to it was a bank transfer receipt of five hundred thousand dollars, paid from a shell company in Panama to the hitman who had pulled the trigger on Arthur.

And the beneficial owner of that Panama shell company was not a rival cartel boss. It was Senator Silas Vance—Julian Vance’s older brother, and the current chairman of the State Judiciary Committee.

"Silas Vance," Lucian breathed, his face paling. "The Director... it’s Senator Vance. He paid to have your brother murdered twenty years ago?"

"Arthur found out that Silas was using the syndicate to launder money for an international human trafficking ring," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Arthur was going to go to the federal prosecutors. So Silas had him executed. Then he framed the Marcone family for the hit, knowing I would launch a war that would wipe the Marcone family off the map."

Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the fire. The truth settled into his chest like a heavy lead weight. For twenty years, he had believed he was fighting for justice, ruling the city with an iron fist to avenge his brother. In reality, he had been a puppet—a blunt instrument used by Senator Silas Vance to clear out rival gangs and secure absolute control over the city's corruption.

"Julian Vance found out," Lucian realized, pointing at the screen. "Julian was Silas’s brother. When Julian took over our accounting three years ago, he stumbled onto the digital trail. He realized his own brother had ordered Arthur’s death."

"Julian couldn't go to the police," Dominic said quietly, looking across the room at Clara, who was nodding off against the pillows, her hand still resting on Bear's fur. "Silas owns the police chief, the state prosecutors, and half the federal judges. Julian took the ledger and went into hiding, waiting for the moment he could get this proof into my hands."

"Julian knew you were the only one with enough firepower and lack of fear to go after a sitting United States Senator," Lucian added.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the room clicked open. Mikhail stepped inside, holding an encrypted satellite phone. His face was grave.

"Boss," Mikhail said. "We have a problem. Senator Vance just held an emergency press conference on live television. He claims his brother Julian was murdered tonight by an unknown criminal syndicate. He has placed a ten-million-dollar federal bounty on Julian’s missing daughter, claiming she was kidnapped by... the Vale Syndicate."

Lucian cursed under his breath. "The bastard is turning the entire law enforcement apparatus of the state against us. By morning, every cop, federal agent, and bounty hunter in Nevada will be hunting for this estate."

Dominic stood up slowly from behind his desk. He walked across the room, stopping near the couch where Clara lay asleep. He looked down at the tiny girl who had carried the truth across a frozen city on a pile of trash.

"Let them come," Dominic said softly, his voice devoid of doubt, devoid of fear.

"Boss?" Lucian asked, his hand drifting to his sidearm. "What are your orders?"

Dominic looked at Lucian, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute clarity. "Mobilize the entire network. Call in every favor, every corrupt politician who isn't owned by Silas, every soldier we have from here to the coast. We aren't hiding, Lucian."

"What are we doing?"

"We are going to war," Dominic said. "And this time, I’m taking the Director’s crown."
